The social and legal context of Canada is of special interest to those
in the language and law field as Canada is officially a bilingual
country with a bijural legal system. Additionally, Indigenous
languages are increasingly recognized at official levels (e.g.,
Inuktitut in Nunavut), and Indigenous cultural norms are often brought
into contact with colonial laws and legal and policing norms,
resulting in intercultural/interlinguistic interactions in the legal
process. Canada’s multicultural and multilingual settler population
also creates the potential for intercultural/interlinguistic
communication in legal or sociolegal contexts, for example, in
police-civilian interactions, lawyer-client interactions, courtroom
interactions, etc.

The Canadian Symposium on Language and Law will draw together both
researchers and practitioners from all areas of language and law
(e.g., linguistics, psychology, sociolegal studies, policing, law) and
those working within the often siloed subfields such as
‘jurilinguistique’/’jurilinguistics’, ‘legal linguistics’, and
‘forensic linguistics’ in order to build a research network that will
facilitate the coalescence and growth of the field in Canada and will
address Canadian justice issues. Additionally, we aim to compile a
statement of intent for the field’s future in Canada, supporting
equity, diversity and inclusion across the Canadian judicial system.

The symposium will also host a roundtable on the future of the field
in Canada.

Les contextes sociaux et juridiques du Canada sont particulièrement
intéressants pour les personnes œuvrant dans le domaine de la
linguistique légale étant donné que le Canada est un pays
officiellement bilingue avec un système bijuridique. De plus, les
langues autochtones étant de plus en plus reconnues aux niveaux
officiels (p. ex., l’inuktitut au Nunavut), les normes culturelles
autochtones sont souvent mises en contact avec les lois coloniales
ainsi qu’avec les normes légales et policières, amenant à des
interactions interculturelles et interlinguistiques. La population
colonisatrice multiculturelle et plurilinguistique du Canada crée
également de potentielles interactions interculturelles et
interlinguistiques dans des contextes sociojudiciaires, par exemple
dans les interactions entre policier et citoyen, entre avocat et
client, dans la salle d’audience, etc.

Le colloque canadien sur la langue et le droit (Canadian Symposium on
Language and Law) réunira les personnes œuvrant dans le domaine se
trouvant à l’intersection entre la langue et le droit (p. ex.
linguistique, psychologie, sociologie du droit, pratiques policières,
droit) ainsi que celles travaillant dans des sous-domaines tels que la
jurilinguistique, la linguistique légale et la linguistique juridique
afin de créer un environnement rassembleur permettant le développement
du domaine au Canada tout en s’attaquant à des questions légales
spécifiques au contexte canadien. De plus, nous prévoyons d’élaborer
une déclaration sur le futur du domaine au Canada qui soutiendra
l’équité, la diversité et l’inclusion dans tout le système judiciaire
canadien.

Call for Papers:

We are pleased to announce that the SSHRC funded Canadian Symposium on
Language and Law will take place at York University, Toronto, Canada
from June 16-18, 2023.

We invite abstract submissions, in French or English, for a poster or
a 20-minute presentation. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words.
The deadline for submission is January 31, 2023. Authors will be
notified of acceptance by March 1, 2023.

We welcome abstracts relating to all aspects of language and law,
including, for example, language in the legal process, the language of
the law, language evidence, language rights, and language crimes, with
an emphasis on the Canadian context and Canadian
scholars/practitioners.

We are pleased to be able to offer four student travel awards valued
at $300 each. Awards will be provided based on abstract excellence and
potential contribution to the field. Authors must indicate their
student status when submitting their abstract to be considered for the
award.

Registration will open March 1, 2023.

Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer la tenue du colloque canadien sur la
langue et le droit (Canadian Symposium on Language and Law), financé
par le CRSH, à l’Université York, Toronto, Canada du 16 au 18 juin
2023.

Nous accueillons les soumissions en anglais ou en français pour des
communications orales de 20 minutes ou pour des présentations par
affiche. Les propositions ne doivent pas dépasser 300 mots. La date
limite pour soumettre une proposition est le 31 janvier 2023. Les
autrices et auteurs des propositions acceptées seront avisés le 1er
mars 2023.
