Job Location: Alaska, USA
Job Title: Assistant Professor of Writing
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Ling & Literature

Description:

The Department of Writing, within the Community and Technical College at the
University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), invites applications for a full-time,
tenure-track assistant professor to teach writing courses in a vibrant
interdisciplinary academic community that serves students from a wide array of
cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We respond to the lifelong learning needs
of students by providing writing instruction for dual enrollment, military
personnel, immigrants, and returning students, with special attention to
non-traditional, at-risk, and English language learners. Our writing courses
serve the general education mission of our campus by developing critical
capacities like reading, writing, and critical thinking, while maintaining a
commitment to social and linguistic justice. Writing courses offered range
from developmental to discipline-specific, including sections designated for
academic Honors.

Duties:
Teaching: This tenure-track position carries a full-time instructional
workload within a vibrant interdisciplinary academic community that serves a
racially and ethnically diverse student body, including Alaska
Native/Indigenous students. The successful candidate will teach four
undergraduate writing courses each semester, with course release opportunities
available for research or community engagement projects. Courses may include,
but are not limited to, developmental reading and writing, introductory
general education writing, writing courses within a vertical curriculum that
branches into disciplines (humanities, sciences, professions), and topic
courses that contribute to an occupational certificate in professional
writing.

Service: Faculty are expected to engage in meaningful service at the
department, college, and/or university level, depending on their interests and
career goals (e.g. assessment, curriculum development and review, student
success initiatives, shared governance, community-engaged projects). Service
assignments will be explored in consultation with the Department Chair and
approved by the College Dean.

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), situated in the state's largest
city, recognizes and values the diversity of our unique location in
Southcentral Alaska, the ancestral homelands of the Dena'ina Athabascan, Ahtna
Athabascan, Alutiiq/Sugpiak and Eyak peoples.

We are seeking a colleague with the knowledge and skills to engage with UAA's
unique cultural environment. Campus diversity flows from the wellspring of
Pacific Rim cultures, and the successful candidate will interact daily with
students from Alaska Native, East Asian, and Pacific Island backgrounds and
will need to provide compassionate support for each of these groups.

The successful candidate will join a department whose primary focus is writing
instruction and whose faculty come to the work from a variety of backgrounds
(creative writing, composition and rhetoric, humanities, and literature).
