Description:

Located in the historic community of Walla Walla, Whitman's beautiful
tree-lined campus is home to an intellectually diverse, dynamic, and
supportive community of some 500 staff and faculty serving roughly 1,500
students from the local region and across the globe. With exceptional
students, accomplished faculty and staff, along with a fiercely loyal and
growing number of engaged alumni, Whitman College continues to build on its
national reputation for academic excellence as one of the top liberal arts
colleges in the country.

The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Program seeks applicants for a position
at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning August 2023. A PhD
and experience beyond graduate school in teaching all levels of undergraduate
Japanese language courses are required. Areas of specialization could include
Japanese literature, Japanese cinema, Japanese linguistics, or other related
fields.

The standard annual teaching load is five courses. Each year, the successful
candidate will offer three to four Japanese language courses and one to two
courses in the candidate's area of expertise, as well as occasional courses
that contribute to the College's general education requirements. The
successful candidate will also be involved in supervising senior capstone
projects. The Japanese Program is a vibrant, tight-knit community. Many of our
students take four years of language courses and thus cultivate strong bonds
with peers and faculty. There are opportunities to participate in a variety of
interdisciplinary programs including Film & Media Studies; Gender Studies;
Indigeneity, Race & Ethnic Studies; Environmental Humanities; and the Global
Studies Concentration. The College provides a generous pre-tenure sabbatical
leave program and professional development support for both research and
teaching.

Whitman College is committed to cultivating an inclusive learning community.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate their commitment to diversity,
equity, and inclusion and articulate how their classroom and scholarly
practices work to advance antiracism in the learning environment. This
statement can be included in the cover letter or the teaching statement. In
their cover letter, candidates should address their interest in working at a
liberal arts college with undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all
levels of instruction.

Please use the application link below to apply. BambooHR will prompt you to
submit all of the required materials: a letter of application; separate
statements addressing the candidate's teaching interests and
scholarly/performance agenda; curriculum vitae; contact information for three
references; graduate transcripts; and evidence of demonstrated or potential
excellence in undergraduate instruction.

Review of applications will begin on 17 January 2023.

Whitman College is cultivating a community built on inclusion and belonging.
We recognize the value of those who can offer historically underrepresented
perspectives and encourage applications from those whose background,
knowledge, and insights from lived experience can add to the college's working
and learning environment. Whitman College is an EEO employer.

Salary Range: $73,000-$85,000

Whitman College offers a competitive benefits package that is designed to
attract qualified candidates and retain talented employees.

New faculty receive reimbursement for moving expenses based on the distance of
relocation and are compensated $1,500 for attending a required New Faculty
Orientation.
