Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Semantics
Lexical Semantics
Required Language(s): Finnish (fin)

Description:

This PhD scholarship is connected with the Australian Research Council
Discovery Project “The Building Blocks of Meaning: A linguistic approach”. The
PhD research will focus on the lexical semantics of Finnish.

The goal of the “Building Blocks of Meaning” project is to investigate how
complex meanings are built up from more basic building blocks, and to what
extent basic meanings differ between different languages, cultures, and
geographical zones. It is based on the theory and methodology of the Natural
Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach. Finnish is one of three languages being
investigated in depth, along with English and Chinese. See
www.youtube.com/watch?v=hODJ7mr1rTQ.

The PhD candidate will play an important role in achieving the project’s aims
in relation to Finnish. To this end, the candidate’s research must include a
study of the semantics of “environmental words” in Finnish. It may also
examine other related areas of Finnish lexicon, such as climate-related
vocabulary or geographical terms. If desired, it may include an applied
aspect, for example, in Easy Finnish (Finn. selkokieli), of up to 25% of the
total research.

The PhD will be co-supervised by Prof. Cliff Goddard and by Dr. Ulla Vanhatalo
(University of Helsinki), who is one of the Partner Investigators on the ARC
project.

PhD candidate will have the unique opportunity of working as part of a leading
team of ARC-funded researchers to develop a competitive track record of
publications and other research outputs.
