Child bilingual processing

The goal of this special issue is to explore language processing in bilingual
children. The vast majority of studies on language processing in bilinguals
have focussed on second language learners (e.g., Clahsen & Felser, 2006; Kaan
& Grüter, 2021; van Hell & Tanner, 2012). As a consequence, little is known
about how children process languages that are being acquired in parallel.
Available research typically uses elicited production and comprehension
experiments, thereby tapping into language processing indirectly (e.g.,
Grüter, 2018; van Dijk et al., 2021). Instead, online techniques (e.g.,
eye-tracking) are necessary to obtain more direct reflections of language
processing (e.g., Marinis, 2010). Indeed, online studies with sequential
bilingual children show a mismatch in what children produce and how they
comprehend language online (e.g., Blom & Vasić, 2011; Chondrogianni & Marinis,
2012). Consequently, the lack of online studies on language processing leaves
us with an incomplete picture of bilingual language development in children.

The available child studies have almost exclusively focussed on sequential
bilinguals (e.g., Blom & Vasić, 2011; Chondrogianni & Marinis, 2012; Marinis &
Saddy, 2013). The few online studies with simultaneous or early bilingual
children have explored a limited range of linguistic properties, namely gender
and number agreement (Bosch, Chailleux, Yee, Guasti, & Arosio, 2022; Lemmerth
& Hopp, 2019), word order overlap (van Dijk, Dijkstra, & Unsworth, accepted),
and lexical overlap between children’s languages (e.g., Koutamanis, Kootstra,
Dijkstra, & Unsworth, 2021; Poarch & van Hell, 2012; Von Holzen & Mani, 2012).
It is unclear whether results extend to other linguistic properties and
contexts and whether factors that have been found to affect bilingual
children’s behaviour offline also affect their behaviour online (e.g.,
quantity/quality of language input, proficiency, language dominance,
cross-linguistic influence and general cognitive abilities; for exceptions see
Koutamanis et al., 2021, Lemmerth and Hopp, 2019, and van Dijk et al.,
accepted).

We invite contributions investigating bilingual processing in children at the
level of the lexicon, morphosyntax, semantics and discourse. We are interested
in submissions providing original data using online techniques (e.g.,
eye-tracking, ERP, self-paced reading/listening), priming experiments, or
which use data collected elsewhere to arrive at novel theoretical insights
concerning language processing in bilingual child populations
(simultaneous/early bilinguals and child L2 learners).

Prior to submitting a manuscript, interested authors are invited to first
submit a title and abstract of 500 words summarizing their intended
contribution. Please send this to the guest editors
(c.vandijk at tu-braunschweig.de and sharon.unsworth at ru.nl). Abstracts will be
reviewed by the guest editors for the purposes of ensuring a proper fit within
the scope of the Special Issue. Full manuscripts will undergo double-blind
peer-review.

Preliminary publication schedule:
- 1 page abstract submission: 1 April 2022
- Notification abstract acceptance: 30 April 2022
- Manuscript deadline: 1 December 2022
- Feedback 1st round of reviews: before 1 March 2023
- Revised manuscript deadline: 1 June 2023
- Feedback 2nd round of reviews: 1 September 2023
- Final manuscript deadline: 1 December 2023
- Publication date special issue: Early/mid 2024 (individual articles will be
published online when accepted)
