Subject: Computational Linguistics: Senior Research Fellowship in Human-like Communication in Autonomous Agents, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium

University or Organization: Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Department: AI-lab
Job Location: Brussels, Belgium
Web Address: https://ai.vub.ac.be/
Job Title: Senior Research Fellowship in Human-like Communication in Autonomous Agents
Job Rank: Asst/Assoc Professor

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The AI lab of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels is looking for candidates for a
Senior Research Fellowship: the appointed staff member holds a Senior Research
Fellowship for 5 years initially, renewable for a second period of 5 years
after positive evaluation.

Teaching:
The teaching must contribute to our programmes in computer science and
artificial intelligence but will at first focus on artificial intelligence and
computational linguistics. The teaching includes a course at the BSc level and
an advanced MSc course about the candidate's own specialization. For all
courses, TA assistance is provided. The candidate is expected to contribute to
the development of our new Bachelor’s programme in Artificial Intelligence.
During the Senior Research Fellowship, the teaching assignment is limited to
maximally 8ECTS per semester.

Research:
The research should revolve around the computational modelling of the
mechanisms underlying human communication, including aspects of its emergence,
evolution, acquisition, and processing. More precisely, the research should be
about how to equip autonomous agents and other intelligent systems with
mechanisms that allow them to co-construct conceptual and linguistic systems.
This would enable them to interact with and communicate about their
environment in order to solve an open-ended set of tasks. The candidate should
be able to demonstrate a track record in this area commensurate with their
career stage.

Other:
The selected candidate is expected to contribute to the general duties and
growth of the department as specified by the university for the given grade,
including the supervision of Ph.D. and M.Sc. students as well as the launching
and seeking of financing for new research projects.

Requirements:
 - You must hold a degree in computer science or artificial intelligence or
present clear evidence of equivalent experience.
 - You should have a strong publication record that demonstrates your
expertise in the field.
 - You have proven experience with supervising Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, and
with managing research.
 - You must have a track record on project acquisition.
 - You should be able to demonstrate a track record in this area commensurate
with their career stage.
 - You subscribe to the university’s vision of education. The full text in
relation to this is available on the university website.

Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a
teaching session.

Members of the academic staff who, as title-holders, are charged with teaching
assignments, must be able to demonstrate the required knowledge of the
language of instruction for the relevant course units. Example: When a course
unit is taught in English, the candidate is required to have the appropriate
certificate. More information about the regulations concerning the language
proficiency you can find via
https://jobs.vub.be/content/Regulations-concerning-language-proficiency/

All applications must at least include the following attachments:
 - a brief CV
 - comprehensive details of academic portfolio
 - research perception, mentioning the candidate’s five most important
publications
 - a concise statement of the reason for applying including explanation about
the development of future research
 - diplomas
