Call Deadline: 15-May-2022

Meeting Description:

The conference “Balkan Languages and Dialects: Quantitative Methods in
Linguistics and Sociolinguistics” (Saint Petersburg 2022) carries on and
extends the discussion of topics raised at the conferences on corpus-based and
quantitative approaches to the Balkan languages and dialects that took place
in 2016, 2018 and 2020 at the Institute for Linguistic Studies of the Russian
Academy of Sciences (https://iling.spb.ru/confs/balkan2016/index.html,
https://iling.spb.ru/events/balkan2018/programme.html.en,
https://iling.spb.ru/events/balkan2020/programme.html.en).
We invite submissions from researchers who study phonology, grammar, and
lexicon of any or several of the Balkan languages and dialects or explore the
linguistic landscape of the Balkan Peninsula from the sociolinguistic point of
view, as well as specialists in the field of linguistic typology and
comparative studies of the world’s languages who use material from the Balkan
languages in their works.
The conference focuses on the presentation and discussion of studies that
apply quantitative methods of linguistics typology and dialectometry to the
Balkan languages and dialects; corpus studies performed on the basis of the
already existing linguistic corpora and databases; sociolinguistic and
contactological studies of individual microareas within the Balkans and the
Balkan linguistic area as a whole, using quantitative methods; works examining
the Balkan languages and dialects in areal and typological perspective.
In addition, within the framework of this conference, it is planned to hold a
round table, where participants will be able to present electronic language
resources already created or being created by them (corpora and databases,
including atlases), which can serve as sources of material for quantitative
studies of the Balkan languages and dialects, and discuss problems associated
with their development.

Call for Papers:

Important Dates:
Submission of Abstracts: May 15, 2022
Notification to the Authors: May 30, 2022

Keynote Speakers:
Nina Dobrushina (Higher School of Economics, Moscow)
Olivier Winistörfer (University of Zurich)

We invite researchers who apply quantitative methods in their studies of the
Balkan language phenomena and (socio)linguistic situations, specialists in
phonology, grammar, and lexicons of the Balkan languages and dialects, and all
linguists who consider the Balkan languages in their studies to submit papers
for the conference “Balkan Languages and Dialects: Quantitative Methods in
Linguistics and Sociolinguistics” that will be held in Saint Petersburg, 20–21
October 2022. The conference focuses on the presentation and discussion of
synchronic and diachronic studies of any one or several of the Balkan
languages and dialects, as well as of the Balkan area as a whole, including:

- corpus studies of phonetic, lexical and grammatical phenomena in a given
Balkan language or dialect, as well as contrastive works based on corpus
material;
- dialectometric studies;
- works that consider the Balkan languages and dialects from the point of view
of the areal-typological approach;
- sociolinguistic studies of the Balkan languages and dialects, adopting a
variationist approach;
- quantitative studies of the correlation of social factors and language
changes (including those caused by language contact) in the Balkan languages
and dialects;
- quantitative studies of bi- and multilingualism in the Balkan language
communities (the influence of sociolinguistic variables on the linguistic
situation);
- quantitative studies of linguistic phenomena that occur in the speech of bi-
and multilinguals (interference and codeswitching), as well as of monolingual
speakers of Balkan languages and dialects (intra-language variation);
- papers presenting new corpora and databases (including atlases), existing or
under development. A special round table will be dedicated to such
presentations.

The languages of the conference are English, French, German, and Russian.
Speaking time is 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for discussion.

Anonymous abstracts of no more than 500 words (excluding references) in
.doc/.docx/.rtf./.pdf format should be submitted to balkancorpspb at gmail.com by
May 15, 2022, with “Abstract” stated as the email subject.
The following information should be provided in the body of the email: (1) the
exact title of your paper (if your abstract is in Russian, please, provide the
English translation as well); (2) the first and last names of every author (if
your write in Cyrillic, please, provide the English transliteration), and
affiliation(s) of every author; (3) the email address of every author.
Abstracts will be evaluated and selected by the Programme Committee. We will
notify you of the Committee’s decision by May 30, 2022.

There is no participation fee.
The organizers will not be able to cover participants’ travel and
accommodation expenses.

If the epidemiological situation is favorable, it will be possible to hold the
conference in a mixed mode (with both offline and online participation). We
