Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; General Linguistics; Linguistic Theories

Call Deadline: 01-Mar-2022

Meeting Description:

PerForum is a one-day workshop on performative expression of meaning, i.e.,
expression of meaning that is intrinsically linked to the expressive act
itself, aiming to bring together researchers from various disciplines
interested in performativity in human language and beyond. The workshop will
feature five invited talks and a peer-reviewed poster session (details below).

Invited Speakers:
1. Lea Allouche (University of Oslo): performativity in poetry
2. Victor Carranza Pinedo (École Normale Supérieure and University of Milan):
expressives in language
3. Raphaela Heesen (Durham University): communication of emotion in non-human
primates
4. Jonna Vuoskoski (University of Oslo): social dimension of music-evoked
emotions
5. Mihaela Popa-Wyatt (University of Manchester): topic TBA

Workshop description (see https://perforum.github.io/about.html for a more
detailed description):
Performative actions are those that achieve their goal directly, by virtue of
being performed. Such actions are an important part of our linguistic and
near-linguistic behavior and can involve meaning-form mappings of varied
conventionalization status as well as forms produced by a variety of
articulators. For instance, we can performatively express our immediate
emotions by producing fully phonologized items like damn or ouch, less
phonologized vocalizations like grunts or huffs, and different types of
gesture (facial, manual, full body, etc.) or prosodic modulations of varied
conventionalization status. We can also performatively use various types of
forms to build rapport with someone or, conversely, to insult them, to express
aspects of our identity or our allegiance to a group or a cause, to perform a
ritual of some sort, etc.

Performative actions in communication raise a range of questions across
multiple disciplines (linguistics, philosophy, psychology, biology, etc.),
which we will aim to explore in this workshop, for instance:
1. How should we model different types of performative expression of meaning
formally, considering that they do not lend themselves well to truth-based
modeling?
2. What are the cognitive mechanisms underlying different types of
performative expression of meaning?
3. How should we model instances of going from performative expression of
meaning to using demonstrations of such expression for non-performative
communication of truth-based meaning (''from performatives to performances'')?
4. As a corollary to the previous question, how should we model instances of
using various forms to performatively achieve conversational effects in a
given context that these forms are not inherently associated with?
5. How do non-human animals performatively express different types of meaning?
6. How does performative vs. non-performative expression of meaning work in
non-linguistic systems of structured outputs, such as dance or music?

COVID-related information:
As things stand, we plan for a hybrid (in-person + online) workshop. All
presenters will be given an opportunity to give their presentation virtually.
Specific COVID-related guidelines and precautions will be announced closer to
the date of the workshop. We also leave open the possibility that we might
have to switch to a fully online format.

Call for Papers:

In addition to the invited talks, the workshop will feature a peer-reviewed
poster session. We invite abstract submissions to the poster session that
address any questions pertaining to performative expression of meaning in
language and beyond (see above for sample relevant questions). Poster
presenters will be expected to give a 3-minute lightning talk before the
poster session. The abstracts should be properly anonymized (including the pdf
metadata) and adhere to the following formatting requirements:

- at most 2 pages, including data, figures, tables, etc. + 1 additional page
for references only
- A4 format and 2.5cm margins, or Letter format and 1in margins
- 12pt font

Please send your abstracts to perforum.workshop at gmail.com. Please provide the
author(s) name(s), affiliation(s), and email address(es) in the main body of
the email.

Submission deadline: March 1, 2022
Notification of acceptance: March 22, 2022
