Background and aims of the collection
Theoretical advances call for reconsidering many aspects of language research
from a dynamic and complex perspective. Yet the field acknowledges the
methodological challenges that researchers face in addressing the complexity
of people’s subjectivity and the variety of their experiences when conducting
investigations at the intersection of language use, first and additional
language learning, and linguistic landscape. Q methodology has been often
referred to as an innovative research method that offers the possibility to
include a deep consideration of individual subjectivities and foreground
dynamic and complex interactions with the surrounding environment. With this
edited volume we aim to:

- Explore how Q methodology provides a new perspective on language matters.
- Demonstrate innovative applications of Q methodology to address the dynamic
and complexity of language issues across a variety of educational and
geographical contexts.
- Consider the boundaries of Q methodology in language research, and
demonstrate its potential to inform theoretical developments.

Contributions
We invite researchers to submit proposals for chapters which adopt Q
methodology to explore people’s subjectivity, perspectives, and points of view
with regards, but not strictly limited, to the following topics:

- Multilingualism
Heritage/background speakers.
Language and multilingual contexts.
Children and adult multilingual language practices.
Speakers’ perspective on multilingualism.
Communication across multilingual settings.

- Language learning
First and additional language acquisition.
Formal and informal language learning environments.
Digital and traditional pedagogies of language learning and teaching.
Motivation, emotions, and cognition in language learning and teaching.
Language learner and teacher beliefs.

- Formal and informal language policies
National and local language policies.
Language reforms.
Language education policies and administrative practices.

We welcome original Q methodology studies, and we especially encourage
submission of studies adopting a single case design, or less conventional
designs such as those using multiple timeframes or visual Q-sets. We also
accept submissions focusing on methodological and theoretical issues regarding
Q methodology and language matters, and papers conducting an in-depth critical
review of language-related Q methodology research. All submissions should
refer to an appropriate theoretical framework and indicate how Q methodology
contributes to advance knowledge of the topic discussed.

If you are interested in contributing to the volume, please submit a 400 word
abstract along with a 100 word bio to Dr Nicola Fraschini
(nicola.fraschini at uwa.edu.au). Submissions are open until January 31, 2022.
All submissions will be reviewed by the editors, and the manuscript will
undergo double-blind peer review. The editors plan to approach an
international publisher once the list of contributors is finalized.
