Job Location: City of Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Job Title: Research Associate
Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Prosodic Structure; Acoustic Analysis

Description:

A 26-month, full-time, post for a Research Associate in Experimental
Phonetics/Laboratory Phonology is available in the Linguistics & English
Language, School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, the
University of Edinburgh.

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious researcher to join an
AHRC-DFG-funded project “Prosodic structure at the interface between language
and speech” (Principal Investigators: Dr. Tina Bögel (U. of Konstanz), Prof.
Alice Turk and Dr. Catherine Lai (U. of Edinburgh)). The project’s goals are
1) to test the Prosodic Interface Hypothesis that speakers plan prosodic
structure in order to achieve Smooth Signal Redundancy (equal likelihood of
recognition of all words in an utterance), and 2) to model language redundancy
effects and the prosodic interface in a formal model of grammar. The primary
responsibility of the post-holder will be to work in Edinburgh to test the
Prosodic Interface Hypothesis with phonetic experiments. The post-holder will
devise experimental materials, run experiments, measure and analyse data,
interpret results, and contribute to preparing manuscripts for publication. In
addition they will liaise with the German team about the implications of the
experimental findings for computational grammars.

Applications are invited from those with a PhD in Linguistics, Psychology,
Cognitive Science, or a related discipline with a background in speech
prosody, laboratory phonology, psycholinguistics and/or experimental
phonetics. Applicants should have a strong track record of research and
publication in relevant areas, and should have experience in designing and
conducting phonetic experiments. Skills in the measurement of speech acoustics
and statistical analysis are essential. Please apply via the application link
below.
