International conference organised to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the
School of International Interpreters, now the Faculty of Translation and
Interpretation of the University of Mons (Belgium)

The late Raymond Renard (1925–2020), renowned linguist and committed humanist,
was one of the founders of the verbo-tonal method of phonetic correction and
of the structuro-global audiovisual method (SGAV), both of which flourished
throughout Europe and beyond from the 1960s onwards. At a time when a growing
number of international organisations were being set up, particularly in
Belgium, itself a multilingual country, Renard, as head of the Institut des
langues vivantes (Institute of Modern Languages) at the Polytechnic Faculty of
Mons, foresaw the growing importance of the fields of translation and
interpretation. In 1962, he founded the School of International Interpreters
(EII – École d’Interprètes internationaux), the excellence of which he never
ceased to defend. Helped by the relocation of SHAPE (headquarters of the NATO
Allied Command Operations) to Mons in 1967 and by the gradual expansion of the
EEC and later the EU, the EII continued to grow and prosper. In 2008, it was
integrated into the University of Mons-Hainaut as an independent faculty – the
EII was the first school of translation and interpretation to acquire this
status in French-speaking Belgium. Raymond Renard was also instrumental in the
later integration of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation (FTI-EII)
into what is now the University of Mons (UMONS), which was created in 2009
through the merger of several institutions of higher education. With its
sixty-year history, the FTI-EII continues to receive international recognition
and was awarded the European Union’s “European Master’s in Translation” label
both in 2014 and in 2019. 
Like the humanities and social sciences in general, the disciplines of
Languages, Literature and Translation Studies (the official name of the
thematic doctoral school ED3 at the Fund for Scientific Research F.R.S-FRNS)
are now at a crossroads. The rise of artificial intelligence and big data as
well as the increasingly complex international situation are changing and
challenging the field, not only on the level of education and research
(including in older disciplines such as comparative literature or translation
criticism) but also on the professional level. Now is therefore an excellent
time to look back on the past and see what valuable lessons it can teach us
for the present and the future of the relevant disciplines. To do this, the
FTI-EII, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, is organising an
international conference which aims at discussing fundamental issues that will
shape the future of our disciplines, while building on the achievements of the
great theorists and practitioners of the past.

Accepted presentations and papers will focus on the history of the disciplines
or on innovations in the professional field, in research, and/or in teaching
within the following disciplines: translation (general, technical/specialised,
literary, etc.), interpretation (conference, liaison, public service),
terminology, language (literature, contrastive linguistics and grammar,
sociology of literature/translation, gender studies), and education (language,
culture, translation/interpreting).

Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts of around 500 words (excl. title and references), written
in French or English and submitted in .doc(x) format. Please make sure the
abstract clearly states the main theme of the paper, lists 5 key words and
indicates the preferred format (presentation or poster). Abstracts should be
sent to the organising committee for double-blind reviewing by 30 September
2022 at the latest: eii.colloque60ans at umons.ac.be.
