Meeting Description:

The Cluster on Language Research at the University of California, Davis is
pleased to announce the Eighth Annual Symposium on Language Research at UC
Davis, which will take place on Friday, May 27th, 2021. As of now (January
2022), the event will take place in-person if the health situation allows it
and will consist of a variety of student presentations, keynote speakers,
awards, networking and social activities designed to foster community and
connection among language researchers from many different backgrounds,
institutions and countries. We welcome a wide array of linguistic topics
across all disciplines related to the study of languages, as it is our goal to
create an open and inclusive symposium which promotes dialogue between all
types of language research. This year the Symposium will also include an
optional Pre-Conference Workshop, focused on learner corpus research, on
Thursday, May 26th.

2nd Call for Papers:

Eligibility: All graduate and undergraduate students, lecturers, postdoctoral
and visiting scholars currently investigating language in some capacity are
encouraged to submit their research, preliminary or otherwise.

Only one abstract submission per person and day is allowed. If you would like
to submit an abstract for both days, please submit a separate form for each
day of the symposium. Each abstract is limited to 350 words and must be
submitted in .pdf format. Only students (those who have not yet completed a
PhD) may submit.

Deadline: March 18, 2022

Please do not include any identifying information in your abstract or file
name. Each individual talk (either symposium day) is limited to 15 minutes,
plus an additional five minutes for questions. Each abstract submitted for the
Symposium main event will be considered for the Most Innovative Research Award
unless requested otherwise. To be considered for the award, you must currently
be enrolled at a post-secondary institution and submit your abstract by March
18, 2022. This year, we will be presenting two awards, one to a graduate
student presenter and one to an undergraduate student presenter. Students that
have already completed a PhD will not be eligible for the Most Innovative
Research award.

If you are submitting a panel presentation (symposium main event), please only
fill out one application form. The form must include three presentations, and
must provide a brief justification as to why they form a cohesive panel.

You may submit for the following two days of the symposium:
1. Symposium Main Event (Friday, May 27th): includes all language-related
research
Possible submissions:
- individual talk
- panel
2. Learner Corpus Research Pre-Conference Workshop (Thursday, May 26th):
focused on learner corpus research
Possible submissions:
- individual talk
- poster

Students (undergraduate and graduate) conducting any language-related research
are also encouraged to join the Three-Minute Thesis Competition, a contest
designed to encourage participants to explain the fundamental points of their
work in a manner accessible to a general audience. The deadline to join is on
March 18, 2022. This year the 3M Thesis will be done asynchronously via
