Meeting Description:

The Modern Languages Association Annual Convention brings together scholars of
language and literature from around the world. This year's convention theme is
''Working Conditions'' and focuses on questions arising from the new
conditions scholars in the discipline need, the new conditions emerging from
literary thought and research, and from new conditions in the classroom and
the academy.

The work of scholars in literature and language already strives to understand
the world in new terms. Literary study uncovers interior visions for another
life, for liberation and justice, and for enabling forces not subject to the
limits of existing reality. Literary and cultural theory identify
transformative methods of counteranalysis. The study of languages, rhetoric,
and composition theory builds powers of interpretation and radical rewriting
that are relevant to texts and institutions alike. All these activities
engender the production of culture and cultural knowledge. The convention
theme encourages members to consider their existing work in the context of
conditions that enable or interfere with it and to explore the transformations
of those conditions that the work implies.

Call for Papers:

MLA 2023: Linguistics and Literature Forum CPF
How do we strive for what April Baker-Bell calls “linguistic justice” in the
college literature classroom? While Baker-Bell’s work addresses the unique
anti-black linguistic racism Black students face in U.S. secondary education,
she demonstrates that this pedagogy “offers ALL students and their teachers a
critical linguistic awareness of language and identity, language and power,
language and history, linguistic racism, and white linguistic and cultural
hegemony” (100). Her framework has influenced those working to dismantle
oppressive language ideologies in educational contexts internationally
(Cushing 2021). We are looking for proposals that work within a Black
Linguistic Justice framework, or draw from it, or are in solidarity with it
while focussing on other oppressed speech communities. Submit a 250-word
abstract and a brief bio.

Deadline: Sunday, 20 March 2022
