Meeting Description:

Workshop on Typology of Ideophones (WTI-2022) will take place on June 24-25,
2022. It is an online meeting co-hosted by York University, Toronto, Canada,
and Nagoya University, Aichi, Japan.

Ideophones refer to ''member[s] of an open lexical class of marked words that
depict sensory imagery'' (Dingemanse, 2019, p. 16). The term ''ideophone'' was
originally coined by Doke (1935) in a study of Bantu linguistics but is now
commonly used as a crosslinguistic cover term for a group of words
alternatively called ''expressives'' or ''mimetics''.

WTI-2022 will bring together specialists of ideophones. The workshop aims at
collectively (a) observing primary data on ideophones in a variety of
languages/dialects, and (b) gaining insight into further typological
characteristics of ideophones.

To this end, we invite papers that descriptively compare the differences and
similarities of ideophones and prosaic words of a language or a dialect of a
language, focusing on one aspect of morpho-phonology, semantics, syntax,
pragmatics or any other feature(s) in a subfield of linguistics.

Please visit https://sites.google.com/view/ideophone-typology for more
information, including possible topics.
