Subject: The Abyss as a Cultural Concept

In the framework of a larger project on the topic of the abyss I am putting
together a volume with a prestigious publisher on this notion in (currently)
18 different languages/cultures. The idea is to compare conceptions of depth
worldwide and to make of the abyss a concept for cultural theory. For this
volume, it would be important to talk about the linguistic and conceptual
history of the corresponding term(s), this can of course imply the use of the
term in cultural manifestations such as literature, however, it should not be
a ’case study’ on the term in one book or film for instance but rather shed
light on the use of the notion in a culture generally.
The person in charge of English had to desist, so I am looking for someone
take over this chapter.
I would also welcome more contributions from African, Asian (Japanese/Chinese
are taken!) and Native American languages/cultures. The chapter (6000w) needs
to be handed in by the end of August at the latest.

If you are interested please get in touch for more information.

Thank you, best wishes!
