Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational/Experimental Sociolinguistics
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Sociolinguistics; Experimental Linguistics, Computational/Experimental Sociolinguistics, Game Design

Description:

The Cornell University Department of Linguistics seeks to recruit a
Postdoctoral Research Associate in computational/experimental linguistics,
from Fall 2022 through Summer 2024. Candidates should have a PhD in
Linguistics or related discipline by the start date. A strong background in
programming is required, and interests in sociolinguistics and game design are
desirable.

This position is funded for two years by a grant from Cornell University. The
Research Associate will receive a salary of $54,835 in the first year with a
3% increase in the second year, along with fringe benefits. There are no
teaching obligations, and time is allotted for the associate to pursue
independent research interests.

The associate will collaborate with P.I. Sam Tilsen (Linguistics) to design
and develop an online system for collecting speech data from remote
participants while they play a map-navigation game. The system will
subsequently be used by the associate and collaborators to conduct
longitudinal experiments on the evolution of speech behavior in small networks
of speakers. The associate and the P.I. will supervise a team of undergraduate
web developers and research assistants over the course of the project.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, cover letter, one or two
writing samples, and names and email addresses of three external referees.
Candidates are invited to provide a statement of Contribution to Diversity,
Equity, and Inclusion. Review of applications will begin immediately and the
position will be filled when a suitable candidate is identified. Inquiries can
be made via e-mail to Heather Russell at the email address below.

As part of the university's comprehensive vaccination program, all Cornell
employees are required to have and provide proof of an FDA-or WHO-authorized
or approved COVID-19 vaccine and booster or have obtained a
university-approved disability/medical or religious exemption, regardless of
their role and work location.

New hires are required to provide documentation showing full vaccination
status (that is, completion of two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or
one shot of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson) before their first day of work. If
a new hire's vaccination is not complete or information is not received by
their start date, the first day of work will be delayed. It is possible in
some cases that an offer of employment may be withdrawn.
