Specialty Areas: Psycholinguistics

Description:

The Center for Language Science (CLS), in the College of the Liberal Arts at
Penn State seeks candidates for the position of Lab Manager/Research
Assistant. The CLS (http://cls.psu.edu/) is an interdisciplinary group of
linguists, psycholinguists, applied linguists, speech-language pathologists,
speech scientists, and cognitive neuroscientists who share an interest in
language acquisition and bilingualism. CLS researchers employ a variety of
methods including behavioral measures, eye tracking, electrophysiological
methods (EEG/ERP), and fMRI. Responsibilities for this position include
assisting with CLS faculty research, managing the laboratory operations
(including equipment maintenance and participant scheduling), providing
technical support for the CLS’s PIRE (Partnerships in International Research
and Education, https://pire.la.psu.edu/) and NRT (National Science Foundation
Research Traineeship) programs, and providing general support for the CLS,
including assisting with outreach events and the colloquium series
(https://cls.la.psu.edu/news-events/CLSSpeakerSeries). Skills and experience
with some programs such as ELAN, E-prime, Ibex Farm, MATLAB, Praat, Python,
and R, are desirable. Training and experience with at least one technical
method (e.g. eye tracking, EEG/ERP, acoustic analysis in Praat) is required,
and knowledge of statistics is also desirable. Additional training will be
provided for technical methods, and for conducting research with human
participants.

Candidates should have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational
skills, the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects, and a strong
curiosity and interest in language science research and methods. Knowledge of
and experience working with languages other than English is also desirable but
not required. In addition, successful candidates must either have
demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse
campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so,
given the opportunity.

The position requires an associate’s degree or higher plus one year of related
experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A
bachelor’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate will have had
laboratory experience as an undergraduate, preferably with both behavioral and
cognitive neuroscience methods.

Please apply via the link below. Interested applicants should submit a cover
letter, a CV, and a listing of three names of references. The cover letter
should include information about how the candidate’s research interests and
experience align with the research being conducted at the CLS. For more
information on CLS faculty projects, visit http://cls.psu.edu and click on the
Research tab.

Penn State is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity,
and inclusion in all of its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a
culture of inclusion that supports both broad and specific diversity
initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity,
and engage all individuals to help them thrive. We value inclusion as a core
strength and an essential element of our public service mission.

Questions about the position can be sent to Dr. Frances Blanchette at the
email address below. The appointment date will be as soon as July 1, 2022 and
no later than September 5, 2022. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for
