Job Title: Associate Professor in English language and linguistics
Job Rank: Associate Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Ling & Literature; Phonology; Pragmatics; Semantics; Syntax

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The Faculty of Education and Arts at Nord University invites applications for
a position as Associate Professor of English language and linguistics. The
position is connected to the Bachelor of English degree, and entails
additional teaching responsibilities such as courses in English language and
linguistics for primary school education grades 5-10 and secondary school
education for grades 8-13.

The English department has a strong literary-historical profile, as evidenced
by its intermediate-level course offerings in English language that integrate
literary themes. To strengthen this profile further, priority will be given to
candidates who can document in their own work the application of linguistic
theory to issues in literary history and analysis. This work must be
compatible with the overall aims of generative linguistics and/or inferential
pragmatics.

Guided by its liberal arts perspective, the department is dedicated to
developing an attractive, lively, internationally visible and intellectually
stimulating portfolio of research-based course offerings in literature,
culture, language and linguistics, and subject pedagogy that meets regional
and national needs for English proficiency at a high level. The Bachelor of
English at Nord University has received the highest rankings of all similar
bachelor-level degrees on national student surveys for the five-year period
2016-2021.

The position is connected to the university’s campus in Bodø. Since classes
are taught face to face on a regular basis, residency in Bodø is required for
this position. Nord University faculties are distributed over several
campuses, so co-operation between faculty regardless of geographical location
is important. The position may involve tasks at Nord University’s other
campuses.

For appointment as associate professor, a Norwegian doctoral degree is
required within a relevant field of study or an equivalent doctoral degree
from abroad that is accepted as a Norwegian equivalent, or competence at a
similar level documented by academic publication of the same scope and
quality. Relevant field of study for the purposes of this search includes
English linguistics, theoretical linguistics (syntax, semantics, phonology,
also pragmatics), or literary linguistics.

 The electronic application must contain:
 - Cover letter
 - Complete CV summarizing education, positions held, teaching and research
experience, publications, administrative experience and other qualifying
activities
 - Copies of diplomas, transcripts and certificates, including the doctoral
dissertation and transcripts from Bachelor, Master and doctoral degrees.
 - Complete copies of up to 15 of the most relevant publications / academic
works that the applicant wishes to be considered, along with a list of those
submitted. The list should include five publications that the applicant
believes to be most important, along with the reasons why. The doctoral
dissertation should be included
 - Statement of teaching philosophy in accordance with supplementary
provisions for educational competence
 - Documentation of other activities which the applicant considers relevant to
the position and desires to be considered in the assessment.
 - Contact information for 2-3 referees

Applications must be submitted online through the Jobbnorge portal by the
closing date of December 11, 2022. See linked URL for details of what the
application must contain and the evaluation process.
