Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invites
applications for a full-time, tenure-track position (position no. 82155) in
Linguistics, with specialization in phonetics, to begin Fall 2023, subject to
position clearance and availability of funds. Seeking outstanding applicants
whose research and teaching specialization in Phonetics will contribute to the
two special strengths of the Department of Linguistics:(a)  a strong
commitment to language sustainability and diversity in the Pacific, Asia and
beyond, and (b) the study of language through experimental methods and the
tools of contemporary cognitive science. The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
offers MA and PhD degree programs in Linguistics, as well as an

Duties and Responsibilities:
 - develop and teach undergraduate/graduate courses in the designated area of
specialization and in general areas based on the needs of the department; 
 - supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students; 
 - serve on graduate committees; conduct and publish original scholarly
research in an area of specialization; 
 - pursue opportunities for external funding; 
 - contribute to the overseeing of laboratories that serve linguistic research
on campus; 
 - contribute service at the department, college, university, and community
levels; 
 - other duties as assigned by Chair.

Minimum Qualifications: 
 - Doctorate or equivalent in Linguistics or related field from a college or
university of recognized standing (ABDs will be considered; all requirements
for doctoral degree must be completed by August 2023); 
 - experience and expertise in phonetics, and evidence of an active research
program; 
 - evidence of successful teaching experience in undergraduate and/or graduate
linguistics courses; 
 - demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially.

Desirable Qualifications:  
 - Expertise in one or more area that will broaden or enhance the strengths of
our linguistic community, including but not limited to: experimental methods,
computational methods, statistical modeling and data science, cognitive
science, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, phonology,
linguistic typology, language documentation and conservation, and a language
or languages of Asia or the Pacific (especially Austronesian languages); 
 - demonstrated excellence in teaching, training, and supervision of graduate
and undergraduate students; 
 - record of and/or demonstrated commitment to securing external funding; 
 - demonstrated commitment to stewarding cutting-edge laboratory facilities
and fieldwork equipment that subserve phonetic research; 
 - evidence of engagement with diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
in research, the classroom, and/or service.
