Description:

NZILBB is seeking a full time Post-Doctoral Fellow to join the team of
researchers working on a project funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand
Marsden Fund “Do patterns of covariation in speech carry social meaning”. The
research team comprises Professor Kevin Watson, Professor Jen Hay and Dr Lynn
Clark. The position is for 2 years.

The project will conduct large-scale experiments using recordings of
naturally-occurring speech to investigate whether patterns of co-varying
sounds can carry social meaning, and whether this social meaning is accessible
to the listener. Building on speech production work by the same team. This
project takes a bottom up approach to studying the perception of covariation
and social meaning, by allowing both the co-varying variables considered and
the potential social meanings to arise directly from the data.

Applications are invited from researchers with a PhD who has expertise in two
or more of the following areas:
 - experimental design,
 - speech perception,
 - sociolinguistics,
 - stylistic variation,
 - acoustic phonetics,
 - statistical modelling,
 - principal components analysis.
Applicants with strong statistical skills will be at an advantage.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be employed by the University of Canterbury and
will be required to relocate to Christchurch, NZ. The expected start is
negotiable between February and April 2023.
