Subject: Launching the Linguist List Fund Drive 2022

 
Dear fellow linguists, 

A couple of days ago my Facebook feed reminded me of an event from 2018: in
the Fall of 2018 I received a small grant to buy a portable ultrasound that I
wanted to use for research on articulation of speech. I naively believed that
2019 would be the year of my big research expedition. Alas, purchasing the
equipment turned out to be an adventure in itself, and the great 2019 research
expedition of mine had been postponed – I thought then – by one year. We all
know what happened later. 2020, 2021 made us change our plans. This summer,
finally, I decided the world out there seemed safe enough and I managed to get
on the road, or I should rather say - on the plane. From the moment I set my
foot out of the door, nothing went according to the plan. I became a part of
this summer’s travel experience – delays, cancellations, lost baggage, closed
hotels, extra charges, hours on the help line… At the moment when you are
reading these words I am still in the field – frankly, the living room of good
people who let me investigate their language – thinking of my return
three-leg-flight with a mix of expectation and apprehension. I haven’t had a
smooth ride this summer but: I got my data!  

Hereby I would like to announce the opening of this year’s fund drive and its
Leitmotif: this year we are celebrating the return of the field linguist! I
hope that you all have had your return to your regular research without much
perturbation. Share with us your stories of an easy or not-so-easy transition
back. Let us know if you have anecdotes from the field research this year or
in the past years. 

While you are back on track, as we hope, please do not forget to donate to the
LINGUIST List this year. A big part of our budget is provided by our host
institution, Indiana University; however, another big chunk of the costs of
our operation is covered by your donations. We have decided to remove Google
ads from our website. While improving your experience with the website, this
will also leave a tangible gap in our budget. As the prices are growing, our
costs of operation have also risen dramatically this year. If you use the
LINGUIST List and want LINGUIST List to continue – please donate, even if it
is only a couple of dollars. If you don’t support the LINGUIST List, are you
sure that somebody else will do it instead of you?
