Description:

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is a government-funded tertiary
institution in Hong Kong.  It offers programmes at various levels including
Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees.  It has a full-time academic staff
strength of around 1,200.  The total annual consolidated expenditure budget of
the University is in excess of HK$7.6 billion.  

Research Assistant Professor in Media and Communication (Ref. 220929016)

The Department of English and Communication within the Faculty of Humanities
at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has a long history of conducting
cutting-edge research in language and communication and producing high quality
graduates for the professional workplace. With a team of around 27 full-time
academic staff, our focus areas are professional communication and applied
language studies, and we provide teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate

The Department is now inviting applications for the position of Research
Assistant Professor.  Top priority will be given to applicants with a
demonstrated record in applying data analytics, including but not limited to
natural language processing, to research and teaching in media and
communication and related areas. 

The appointee will be required to: 
 - conduct research as the main duty and actively pursue external research
grants, such as General Research Fund, as Principal Investigator or
Co-Investigator; 
 - provide quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level, including
contribution to the AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) component of the Department’s
undergraduate programme; 
 - contribute to departmental service; and 
 - perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her
delegates.

Applicants should: 
 - have a doctoral degree in Media and Communication, Applied Linguistics,
Computational Linguistics, Data Science or a related discipline; 
 - have demonstrated promise of a high level of creative ability in research
and teaching in some subdivisions of their field;
 - be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills; and 
 - be highly proficient in written and spoken English.  
Strong preference will be given to those with a demonstrated record of data
analytics applications.

Conditions of Service: 
A highly competitive package including a medical benefits plan and a gratuity
payable upon completion of the term which is normally for three years
initially, with possibility of extension for another three years.
