Meeting Description:

The Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS) at the University of
Bern and the Swiss Federation for the Deaf (SBG-FSS) are delighted to announce
a two-day workshop ''Languages and Lives in Deaf Communities'', which will
take place in Bern on 18-19 November 2022.

During these two days, 11 Deaf scholars will present their research on various
topics related to sign languages and Deaf communities, including issues of
identity, accessibility, education, multilingualism, and linguistic variation.
Group discussions will also take place in which workshop participants can ask
questions and share their own experiences. The goal of the event is to make
Deaf communities more visible in all their linguistic and cultural aspects, to
discuss obstacles faced by deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and to promote
academic research in the field.

Invited scholars include:
Robert Adam (Heriot-Watt University) · John Conama (Trinity College Dublin) ·
Maartje de Meulder (HU – University of Applied Sciences Utrecht) · Hilda
Haualand (Oslo Metropolitan University) · Joseph Hill (Rochester Institute of
Technology) · Annelies Kusters (Heriot-Watt University) · Rezenet Moges-Riedel
(California State University Long Beach) · Erin Moriarty (Gallaudet
University) · Joseph Murray (Gallaudet University) · Nick Palfreyman
(University of Central Lancashire) · Kristin Snoddon (Toronto Metropolitan
University)

Participation in the workshop is free. All presentations will be delivered in
American Sign Language (ASL) or International Sign (IS). Simultaneous
translation to English will be provided.

The workshop will be live-streamed and remote participation is possible.
