Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Psycholinguistics
Cognitive Psychology

Description:

The Digital Linguistics Group at the Department of Computational Linguistics
studies how humans process language (experimental and computational
psycholinguistics), and how we can use insights about human language
processing to enhance language-related technological applications (NLP,
machine learning).

The advertised position will be part of an SNSF-funded project that will
investigate individual differences in how humans process sentences from a
cross-linguistic perspective. Besides experimental work with eye-tracking and
other behavioral methods, the project has a strong methodological emphasis on
sta-tistical and computational modeling.

The project is tightly coupled with the EU COST Action Enabling Multilingual
Eye-Tracking Data Collection for Human and Machine Language Processing
Research (MultiplEYE)

The project's duration is 4 years, starting from January 1, 2023.

Your responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting experimental data
(mainly eye-tracking), the statistical analysis of the collected data and
computational cognitive modeling.

You will investigate the role of individual differences in sentence processing
using experimental and computational methods.

Your profile:
The successful candidate holds a Master's degree in (Computational) Cognitive
Science, Computational Linguistics, Psycholinguistics or a related field, and
has experience with Python and/or R programming. He or she is curious to
understand how humans process language, and enjoys analyzing and modeling
linguistic data. Ideally, he or she has a solid background in statistics
(preferably Bayesian statistics), and is eager to develop his/her statistical
skills further. He or she has some experience with computational cognitive
modeling, NLP, and possibly also with machine learning, or has an inherent
capacity to quickly acquire new skills. The successful candidate furthermore
has a solid background in linear algebra, calculus and probability theory, or
is able to fill in any gaps in a self-organized way when starting the PhD.
Excellent command of English is mandatory.

What we offer:
We offer an inspiring research environment in an enthusiastic team, and the
opportunity to work within a European network of researchers interested in
psycholinguistics and NLP (MultipLEYE:
https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA21131/#tabs+Name:Description).

We provide high-end lab facilities (DiLi lab:
https://www.cl.uzh.ch/en/digital-linguistics/lab.html and LiRI:
https://www.liri.uzh.ch/en.html), and the opportunity to carry out your own
research within the scope of the project at one of Europe's leading (LERU)
universities in one of the top ten most liveable cities world-wide.

Place of work:
Department of Computational Linguistics, Andreasstrasse 15, 8050 Zürich,
Switzerland

Applications, with the reference "PhD_MeRID", including your CV, academic
certificates, list of publications (if applicable), motivation letter and
names or letters of two referees should be sent as a single PDF to
digital-linguistics at cl.uzh.ch. The position is open until it has been filled.
