Linguistic Field(s): Pragmatics

Meeting Description:

Since the publication of Relevance: Communication and Cognition, Sperber &
Wilson’s ground-breaking theory of communication has influenced scholars in a
number of disciplines. While firmly rooted in Pragmatics, it has enabled
scholars in other areas of linguistics and related disciplines such as (but
not limited to) translation and interpreting studies and psychology to view
human communication through the cognitive lens.

More recently, the influence of relevance theory has spread into emerging
topics and other disciplines. For example, ideas from relevance theory have
been applied to research in online communication, media communication,
emotions, art, experimental pragmatics, and pedagogy. This free one day online
conference will bring scholars together to share their latest work in
relevance theory across different fields. By showcasing a wide range of
topics, we aim to provide a platform for fruitful discussions to reconfirm the
explanatory power of the theory and its potential to develop further afield.
