Dear Linguist List,

We have recently been running a survey to find out you think we're
doing (https://iu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ebcFof6jA22c2hg) to be
sure that we are being as useful to you as we can and also to make
best use of the money that you have been so generously donating to us
in the fund drive that we're currently running
(https://funddrive.linguistlist.org/donate/).

I just read through the survey responses that have come in so far and
on the question of what we can be doing better, I noticed a trend that
quite a few of you wish you could get fewer emails from us. This is a
desire which I fully understand - I currently have 91 unread emails
from the mailing list.

Some of you specifically wanted to filter by location or language,
which I agree would be good features to have and which are on my todo
list for shortly after I finish getting the login system working on
the new website. But, in the meantime, there is some filtering that is
already available and which I suspect will be helpful to many of you,
and this is filtering by topic.

If you go to
https://listserv.linguistlist.org/cgi-bin/mailman/options/linguist you
can log in the address you originally subscribed to the list with and
the password that the list sent you when you signed up. If, like any
normal person, you ignored and forgot the randomly generated password
from years ago which you never needed, that page also has the option
of reminding you what your password is.

Once you have logged in, you will see a list of options. The relevant
one for us is about 2/3 of the way down the page and is labeled "Which
topic categories would you like to subscribe to?" If you check the
boxes for, say, "Books", "FYI", and "Disc" and then click "Submit My
Changes" at the bottom of the page, then going forward you will only
receive book announcements, FYI posts, and discussion posts, and you
will not receive any emails about jobs, conferences, reviews, or our
various other categories.

And so, go forth and filter boldly, for a world with fewer irrelevant
emails is a better world.
Daniel
