Meeting Description:

The conference intends to offer a framework in which to welcome
studies on those varieties of Italian that are usually considered
peripheral, in particular those (1) of Italian speakers outside
Italy's political borders, (2) of new Italian speakers in Italy and
(3) of learners of Italian in the world, without however losing sight
of the Italian of Italy (understood both as a system and as an entire
architecture of uses and varieties) as the indispensable point of
reference.

Call for Papers:

The conference intends to offer a framework in which to welcome
studies on those varieties of Italian that are usually considered
peripheral, in particular those (1) of Italian speakers outside
Italy's political borders, (2) of new Italian speakers in Italy and
(3) of learners of Italian in the world, without however losing sight
of the Italian of Italy (understood both as a system and as an entire
architecture of uses and varieties) as the indispensable point of
reference.

We therefore also accept proposals on Italian linguistics that fall
outside the three thematic strands outlined below.

I.
Swiss Italian as a linguistic reality that necessarily has to contend
with the other confederate languages and to which a whole range of
varieties of usage is refined: the dialects of Svizzera Italiana,
federal Italian, the Italian of Italian immigrants of different
generations, a whole repertoire of varieties that always needs to be
studied, even if it is already covered by the rich scientific
literature.

II.
The Italian of non-native speakers in Italy which evokes first and
foremost the problem of the linguistic integration of immigrants, a
theme that is increasingly present in both scientific research and
language policies. The problem is part of a broader framework of
social integration in the host society, a multidimensional process
that takes into account several variables among which the linguistic
aspect is among the most important, as highlighted by several EU
documents (see e.g. COM(2005)389; 2007/435/EC; COM(2011)455), in which
the member states are called upon to implement policies aimed at
fostering L2 language teaching. The issue of language
teaching/learning is interrelated to a whole series of problems, among
which, in addition to linguistic (interlinguals, mistilinguistic
phenomena) and glottodidactic (e.g. the management of multilingual
classes) there are also identity issues: the maintenance of the
linguistic-cultural identity of origin and the stigmatisation of
non-native accents by Italians.

III.
Italian outside of Italy: language of the Italian diasporas scattered
throughout the world, with all the problems connected therewith: the
erosion and maintenance of the language, the placement of Italian and
its varieties in the global linguistic space of the host society; the
phenomena of mystilinguism, etc.

Finally, Italian is one of the most studied languages in the world,
which calls for reflection both on the input to be proposed in
language courses (which Italian to propose to learners?; only standard
Italian? ), as well as on the learners' output (study of
interlanguages and linguistic transfer according to the learners'
provenance; testing techniques); to which must be added the
examination, elaboration and revisitation of glottodidactic techniques
and linguistic and linguistic-cultural resources available to teachers
and learners (manuals; corpora, etc.).
