Meeting Description:

The Fifth International Conference on Mongolic Linguistics (ML 2023)
to be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from August 14 to 18, 2023, is
based on the theme “Historical and Modern Mongolic Varieties: General
Features and Specific Developments”. The Conference is co-hosted by
Institute for Mongolian Studies, National University of Mongolia,
Department of Mongolian Language and Linguistics, National University
of Mongolia, and Institute for Linguistic Studies, Russian Academy of
Sciences, with the collaboration of Kalmyk State University, Buryat
State University, Kalmyk Scientific Center, Russian Academy of
Sciences, and Inner Mongolia University.
ML 2023 will serve as a comprehensive forum for exchange of novel
knowledge and experience in investigating various aspects of Mongolic
languages, especially those subsumed under the general theme of the
Conference. It builds on the outcomes of the previous international
conferences of the ML project (St. Petersburg, October 2013; Elista,
May 2016; Lindong Town, Baarin Left Banner, July–August 2018;
Ulan-Ude, October 2020).

The following issues are expected to be discussed:
- General trends and specific features in the development of
historical and modern Mongolic varieties;
- Contemporary methods and approaches to the study of the Mongolic
languages;
- Current issues of modern Mongolic linguistics and philology;
- Problems of classification and historical periodization of Mongolic
languages and dialects;
- Typology of Mongolic phonological, grammatical and lexical systems;
- Principles and methods of modern Mongolic dialectological studies;
- Problems and perspectives of building Mongolic language and dialect
corpora;
- Mongolic cultures and languages in contact: history and present
condition;
- Recent advances in Mongolic etymological studies;
- Sociolinguistic situations in Mongolic-speaking areas.

This list of possible topics is by no means exhaustive or directive,
it just provides the framework of the Conference.
The working languages at the Conference will be English, Russian, and
Mongolian.

Unfortunately, the Organizing Committee currently lacks funding to
cover travel expenses and accommodation.
During the Conference, certain sightseeing activities will be
provided, namely a guided tour to the Chinggis Khan Statue Complex and
the Tonyukuk (Bain Tsokto) inscriptions.
