Data visualization with ggplot2 for linguists: Design principles and
efficient work flows

Host Institution: University of Konstanz
Coordinating Institution: University of Konstanz
Website: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/data-visualization-with-ggplot
2-for-linguists-tickets-691713382347?aff=oddtdtcreator

Dates: 05-Sep-2023 - 05-Sep-2023
Location: Konstanz (Online), BW (Online)

Focus: Description: The R package ggplot2 has become the lingua franca
of data visualization in recent years, and data visualization is
increasingly recognized as a crucial piece of data analysis, including
in linguistics. This ggplot2 workshop provides hands-on guided
exercises in which we will explore how to make beautiful and effective
data visualizations of linguistic data. Importantly, attendees will
learn about design principles that are evidence-based, building on
existing research on the psychology of graph comprehension. This way,
attendees will come home not only with an in-depth understanding of
ggplot2, but also with a clear idea about how to approach data
visualization problems that is in line with what we know actually
works.
Requirements: The workshop will be useful for people who are already
using ggplot2 as well as people who have never used ggplot2. It helps
to have minimal knowledge of ggplot2, but this is not required.
Attendees are, however, expected to have minimal knowledge of R and
the tidyverse. If this is not the case and you feel that you need a
primer in R and the tidyverse, complete the first three chapters of “R
for Data Science” (2nd Edition): https://r4ds.hadley.nz/
Minimum Education Level: MA
