Subject: Version 4.0 of the English Dialect Dictionary (EDD) Online Has Been Launched

After 18 months’ work on the Innsbruck online interface of Wright’s
English Dialect Dictionary (EDD; 1898-1905), its new version 4.0 has
now been published. This brand-new version represents the final phase
of a project that has been carried out by Manfred Markus and his team
at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) since 2006.

Free availability and usability
EDD Online is licenced under Creative Commons Licence CC-BY 4.0. This
means that we need you to accept the following term of use:

indicate any changes made.

You are free to:

format.
- adapt, i.e. remix, transform, and build upon the material for any
purpose, even commercially.

Find EDD Online 4.0 via: https://eddonline4-proj.uibk.ac.at

THE COMPUTERISED VERSION HAS ESSENTIAL ADVANTAGES:
- It allows for detailed access to the most comprehensive English
dialect dictionary ever published, Joseph Wright’s EDD (1898-1905) –
the book version of which is, in many ways, inaccessible.
- It covers the time from 1700 (and earlier) to 1904, when traditional
areal dialects were still widely spoken, and includes the main
English-speaking countries worldwide.
- It provides a sophisticated search tool, which allows for previously
unraised questions on eight lexicological parameters to be combined
with eight filters and more than a hundred sub-filters

WHAT IS NEW IN EDD ONLINE 4.0?

It offers
- a more user-friendly interface
- corrected algorithms for providing ad-hoc choropleth maps
- improved identification of Wright’s abundant sources

A basic Guide describing the potentials of EDD ONLINE and how to use
it is available on its interface. EDD Online 4.0, like its
predecessors, was supported by the Austrian Science Fund and the
University of Innsbruck.
