From: J. Weemhoff [j.weemhoff at uu.nl]
Subject: English; Phonology: Chair (Full Professor) in English Linguistics/Laboratory Phonology (1.0 FTE), Utrecht University

University or Organization: Utrecht University
Department: Institute for Language Sciences
Job Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
Web Address:
https://www.uu.nl/en/research/institute-for-language-sciences
Job Title: Chair (Full Professor) in English Linguistics: Laboratory
Phonology (1.0 FTE)
Job Rank: Full Professor

Specialty Areas: Phonology

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The Department of Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht
University is searching to fill a professorship of English
Linguistics, with a specialisation in Laboratory Phonology (1 FTE,
consisting of 50% teaching and leadership and managerial tasks, and
50% research).

As chair you are focused on teaching and researching experimental
approaches to phonology, a growing field in language sciences that
addresses theoretical questions on the sound structure of language and
the phonetics-phonology interface from an experimental perspective.
The establishment of the chair is also intended to create new lines of
collaboration within the Department, with research conducted into
phonology from a multifaceted perspective — including theoretical,
computational, and (supra)segmental perspectives — and at the
interface with linguistic subdomains such as morphology, syntax,
pragmatics, phonetics and neurolinguistics. Within the broader
university framework, you will strengthen the cross-connections
between fundamental research into sound structure and applied research
into typical and atypical development of speech; this research takes
place in conjunction with colleagues in the Faculty of Humanities, the
Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the University Medical
Centre. Organisationally, the research of the chairholder will be
positioned in the Institute for Language Sciences. Since you as the
chairholder will be required to perform senior managerial and
leadership duties, good and inclusive managerial, organisational and
communication skills are mandatory.

Utrecht University strives towards enhancing the diversity amongst its
staff and students. We explicitly welcome applications from a wide
variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Profile

The profile of the successful candidate should relate favourably to
the following characteristics:
 - Excellent and innovative researcher (an assessment based on
international peer review) in the field of English Linguistics, with a
specialisation in experimental approaches to phonology;
 - Capable of combining theoretical research with research that is
relevant to societal questions (e.g. second language development in
children in an educational context, adolescent and mature
second-language learning connected to questions of in- and exclusion,
English as a lingua franca in institutional environments, language
contact and its societal effects);
 - Capable of stimulating and furthering research by others, among
others by successfully landing research grants and seeing projects
through to their completion;
 - Inspired and inspiring teacher, capable of initiating educational
innovation and of carrying responsibility for teaching programmes at
undergraduate and graduate level; in particular in the context of the
undergraduate programme in English language and culture, as well as in
the research Master of Linguistics;
 - Is at home in multidisciplinary contexts and as part of teams of
varying composition;
 - Willingness to promote the core values of the Faculty of
Humanities: professionalism, transparency, responsibility, connection
and safety;
 - Capability and readiness to take on senior managerial functions in
the short term.

The UU works with the methodology of Triple that values teamwork over
individualism and calls for an open academic culture that promotes
accountability, reproducibility, integrity and transparency, and where
sharing (open access, FAIR data and software) and public engagement
are normal daily practice.
