Job Title: Assistant Professor, Acquisition of Syntax
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Cognitive Science, Psychology,
Neuroscience, Communication Sciences and Disorders

Description:

The Department of Linguistics in the Division of World Languages,
Literatures, and Cultures (DWLLC) at the University of Iowa seeks to
hire an experimentally focused linguist whose research examines the
acquisition and/or learning of syntax, or that of the interfaces of
syntax with other domains (semantics, prosody, etc.). The ideal
candidate will have primary expertise in the fields of syntax and its
interaction with language acquisition (first, second, third, multiple,
or heritage) and/or language behavior (e.g., adaptation, plasticity),
with a strong record of experimental research in these areas and of
publication in peer-reviewed journals. The appointment will be a
tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, effective
Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

We particularly encourage candidates with a collaborative approach who
envision themselves working with theoreticians and experimentalists in
a variety of fields, and who can situate their study of acquisition
and learning in the broader study of cognition and/or other scientific
fields. There are many opportunities to contribute to programs
committed to cross-disciplinary inquiry and to develop ties to
language scientists in DWLLC and other units, including Psychological
and Brain Sciences and Communication Sciences & Disorders.
Interdisciplinary groups such as the DeLTA Center (Development,
Learning, Theory and Application) and the Cognitive Science of
Language Certificate program will also facilitate such interactions.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play an
important role in the Department of Linguistics by helping to shape
its cross-disciplinary language sciences initiative in the area of
acquisition and learning, and will figure prominently in the graduate
certificate program in the Cognitive Science of Language.

To apply, please visit jobs.uiowa.edu and reference Requisition
#74922. The application materials must include a letter of
application, a curriculum vitae, three sample publications, and three
letters of recommendation. Screening begins November 1, 2023 and will
continue until the position is filled. Preliminary Zoom interviews
will be conducted in December.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct
history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not
limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related
release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential
check and credential/education verification. Up to 5 professional
references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment
process. Please note that this position is not eligible for visa
sponsorship in the United States.

The Department of Linguistics and the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences are strongly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
the strategic plans of the University and College reflect this
commitment. The University of Iowa is an equal opportunity/affirmative
action employer. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and
will receive consideration for employment free from discrimination on
the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, age, sex,
pregnancy (including childbirth and related conditions), disability,
genetic information, status as a U.S. veteran, service in the U.S.
military, sexual orientation, gender identity, or associational
preferences.
