Meeting Description:

The fourth annual Central Asia Language and Education conference (CALE
2024) will take place at KIMEP University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on
May 16-17, 2024. The theme for this year’s conference is “Raising
Multilinguals.”

Call for Papers:

Abstract submissions are invited to the fourth Central Asia Language
and Education Conference (CALE) to be hosted by KIMEP University in
Almaty, Kazakhstan on May 16-17, 2024. This conference welcomes
researchers working on language education, sociolinguistics,
linguistics, second language acquisition, TESOL, and related
disciplines. Although the conference overall has a special interest in
how issues of language and language education play out in Central
Asia, papers do not need to be related to Central Asia, and
researchers do not need to be based in the region.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Raising Multilinguals”. Papers
are encouraged to address this theme but not required. We welcome
papers related to all topics listed below.
Individual paper presentations should report on original research by
one or more authors. Individual papers will be allocated 20 minutes
for presentation plus 5 minutes for discussion.

First authors, presenters, and other attending participants must
register for the conference. Each participant may submit only one
abstract as the first or sole author, but can be a second, or
subsequent, co-author of another paper or papers.
The working languages of the conference will be English, Kazakh, and
Russian. Plenary talks will be held in English, but abstracts may be
submitted in any of the three working languages.

The conference will be 20,000 Kazakhstani tenge for faculty
participants and 10,000 for students. The conference will be held in
person at KIMEP University in Almaty.

Papers presented at the conference will be eligible for publication in
the journal Language, Culture, Environment
(https://www.kimep.kz/lcej/). Further information about publication
opportunities is forthcoming.

Submission
Abstracts should be a maximum of 250 words (including any references)
to our submission portal
(https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/6930/submitter) by 23:59 on
January 15, 2024, East Kazakhstan Time (GMT +6).
Abstracts should address the theoretical basis, methodology, data, and
significance of the research.

Abstract topics may include:

Family language policy
Language teaching, applied linguistics
Language acquisition
Sociolinguistics
Education and language policy
Language and literacy
Language education and peace
Language education and in/equality
Translation studies
Teaching literature and culture
