Dear All,

The end of the year is coming, and most of us will look back and
reflect on the past months. Here at the LINGUIST List, we are thinking
of the past year with gratitude. This year we asked you to answer some
questions because we wanted to learn more about you, our audience, and
your needs. More than 500 people responded, and we would like to
profusely thank you for that!

Now, I bet you would like to find out more. It turns out that more
than 50% of respondents read the LINGUIST List daily. Most respondents
(40%) regularly use the website, 25% of respondents read the emails
from the mailing list; when asked which channel of information is used
most often – people still point to the email. The biggest group of our
respondents (30%) are young linguists at the beginning of their
career. The message is clear: LINGUIST List does not get older. Our
audience consists predominantly of faculty or university students. Our
readers live and work everywhere. Some countries from which the
responses came include US, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Brazil,
Chile, Colombia, UK, European Union countries, Ukraine, Turkey,
Turkmenistan, Georgia, Oman, India, Pakistan, China, Japan, Myanmar,
Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Vietnam, South Africa, Ethiopia, Algeria,
Tunesia, Nigeria, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia. We asked which
areas are most important to you; and to no surprise, jobs and
conferences are unanimously important for the community, or even
‘indispensable’, as one of the respondents put it.

Some respondents praise us for the new website; some others complain.
The old site had to go: it was too expensive to maintain, the
technology became obsolete, and the color scheme screamed ‘nobody has
updated me in 15 years’. The text on tabs and the location of the
buttons might have changed, but the new site has the same
functionalities as the old site. We continue to work on improving the
searches. We are grateful for your patience and understanding while we
are retiring the old website.

You have asked for additional features, including a tour of the
website (coming in January!), more articles featuring individual
linguists or particular research methodologies, options to connect
with other linguists in your area of study, resources for teachers of
linguistics. Your suggestions are taken very seriously, and we plan to
address at least some of them in 2024.

Thanks to all who responded to the survey. Thank you for all the words
of encouragement! They mean a lot to us.

During this holiday season, many of us are preparing gifts for those
people important in our lives. Some of you donate to charities. Please
don’t forget about the LINGUIST List this holiday season. We are a
non-profit organization. Our host Indiana University provides only a
part of our budget. You can contribute to maintaining the service by
donating – whether small or big donations, depending on your means.
This way you don’t just support the LINGUIST List. You support the
discipline, and your students and colleagues out there who are better
informed and better connected thanks to the LINGUIST List.

To make a gift to the LINGUIST List, you can use the LINGUIST List
account at Indiana University Foundation by visiting
https://go.iu.edu/4Rr5.

The minimum donation amount for the gifts via IU Foundation is $5. If
you do not want to receive any further solicitation letters from
Indiana University Foundation, please mark the appropriate field while
setting up an account with IU Foundation, or write me directly at
gosia at linguistlist.org. I will make sure that your record at IU
Foundation includes this information.

You can also donate hassle-free via eLingustics Foundation using
Paypal by visiting
https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=87C2AXTVC4PP8.
eLinguistics Foundation is a registered non-profit, whose mission is
to support the LINGUIST List and similar initiatives in the field of
linguistics. All funds donated via eLinguistics Foundation will be in
their entirety used by the LINGUIST List. There is no minimal donation
when using this channel.

If you cannot donate, sharing the message with your friends and
colleagues is also helpful.

Thank you for being with us. Happy holiday season!
