Description:

Applications are invited for a one-year renewable position (up to two years)
starting in the spring of 2023 at the CNRS research unit Langage, langues et
cultures d’Afrique (“Languages and cultures of Africa”) (LLACAN) within the
European Research Council funded project, BANG: Investigating the origins of a
West African language and population isolate (PI Abbie Hantgan). The position
will provide an opportunity for an interested candidate to collaborate with a
dynamic team of researchers to test the limits of what is possible in
historical, computationally-supported linguistics and to discover hitherto
unknown pathways of early human migration and settlement in the Sahel region
of West Africa. 

Qualified applicants must have the following:
 - PhD in historical linguistics or related field (as relevant to the project,
i.e. African linguistics, data science, language science);
 - Research background in historical and/or comparative methods;
 - Capacity to publish in international peer-reviewed journals; 
 - Ability to present at international conferences;
 - Keen interest in language isolates.
 - Ideal applicant qualifications also include:
 - Willingness to conduct fieldwork in West Africa;
 - Programming knowledge in Python and/or other computer languages;
 - Ability to communicate, read, and write in French.

Duties of the postdoctoral fellow include:
 - Collecting data from databases, dictionaries, and grammatical descriptions
of West African languages;
 - Complementing previously gathered linguistic data with new fieldwork
materials; 
 - Analyzing borrowing and cognancy patterns within and across language
families;
 - Synthesizing results of comparative processes for presentations and
publications.

The position is being funded by a grant from the European Research Council
(ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON)
grant number 101045195.

All nationalities are welcome to apply. The postdoctoral researcher will be
expected to relocate to the Paris area of France. They will be affiliated with
the CNRS, the leading research institute in France. They will be integrated
into the LLACAN laboratory, a vibrant community of scholars committed to world
class research on African languages. LLACAN is conveniently located in the
southern suburbs of Paris (reachable by metro and other public transport).
