Description:

The ANR-DFG Project IMMAGES (“Hosting a clause: Implications for the
matrix and its guests” https://cethis.univ-tours.fr/version-francaise/
projets-finances/fral-immages) invites application for a three-year
PhD position in Greek syntax starting on Sept. 1, 2023 to be hosted at
Université de Tours (https://www.univ-tours.fr/) under the supervision
of Pr. Richard Faure
(https://cethis.hypotheses.org/files/2022/09/CV-Faure-2022.pdf).

Keywords: ancient Greek, diachrony, syntax, semantics, clausal
complementation, subordination, corpus of historians
Deadline: preferrably April 1 2023 (position open until filled)
Contact Information: richard.faure at univ-tours.fr

The general goal of the project is to contribute to our understanding
of clausal complementation by focusing on the way clausal complements
(e.g., “(I think) that it is raining”) are inserted in the matrix
clause. This matter has been the subject of much research in the past
50 years because, compared to an NP object, the relationship of the
clause to the matrix predicate notoriously tends to be deviant both
semantically and syntactically. A number of hypotheses try to account
for these facts. The project aims to put to the test the various
ideas, building on the history of languages, dialectological
variation, linguistic comparison, philosophical insights, starting
with Basque, French, German (and dialects of German), Greek,
Hungarian.
As far as Greek is concerned, there have been several synchronic
investigations on clausal complementation in Greek from the early
stages to present-day Greek (Jacquinod ed., Faure, Bentein, Roussou,
Angelopoulos, among many others). However, to the exception of
Nicholas, the history of FINITE complementation has received little
attention (compared to the loss of NON-FINITE, e.g., infinitival
constructions, see Joseph). The purpose of this PhD is to explore how
Greek went through the diverse stages that were described. The exact
corpora, chronological range and constructions to be investigated will
be decided with the supervisor.

be provided for travel expenses as well as a computer

The ideal candidate is expected to:
 - have a Master degree by the end of the Academic year (August 2023);
 - fully master ancient Greek; (some knowledge of modern Greek is
welcome but not required)
 - have some knowledge of and interest for building specific corpora
(epigraphic and/or papyrological and/or literary, interest for
historians is welcome);
 - have an (at least light) education in linguistics;
 - the motivation and qualifications for acquiring the competence to
deal with the (formal) syntactic and semantic literature on
complementation;
 - willingness and ability to work both in collaboration and
independently.

Supporting Documents (to be emailed to richard.faure at univ-tours.fr):
 - Curriculum Vitae (CV);
 - Cover letter explaining the motivation, experience, research
interests of the applicant, elaborating on how these fit in with the
research goals of the project (1-2 pages);
 - The contact information for up to two referees (who may be
contacted at a later stage);
 - One or two writing samples (Master's thesis if completed).

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.
