Call Deadline: 01-Mar-2023

Meeting Description:

We are pleased to announce the Workshop on Finiteness, Clause Types, and
Cartography, to be hosted at the University of Graz on 30 June 2023. The event
provides a forum for original work on the impact of finiteness on the form and
interpretation of clause types from the perspective of cartography-style
models.

The workshop is preceded by the 16th International Conference on the Structure
of Hungarian (ICSH 16), to be held on 28-29 June 2023 at the same venue.

Invited speaker:

Susi Wurmbrand (University of Vienna/Harvard University):
Finiteness and Cartography (preliminary title)

Convener:

Hans-Martin Gärtner (Hungarian Research Institute for Linguistics):
On the Grammar and Pragmatics of Non-Finite Root Structures (preliminary
title) [invited talk at the main session of ICSH 16]

2nd Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts for 30-minute presentations (excluding Q&A) that present
original work on the impact of finiteness on the form and interpretation of
clause types from the perspective of cartography-style models. Topics of
interest include (but aren't limited to):

- relations between finite and non-finite counterparts of clause types (e.g.,
interrogatives);
- questions of (in)dependence and embeddability, as raised, for example, by
the infinitive-subjunctive-imperative group;
- illocutionary effects (e.g., anti-assertion conditions on root
infinitivals);
- interpretive consequences of (covert) modality, tenselessness, and (special)
subject licensing;
- determinants of complementation hierarchies;
- morphosyntactic shapings of clausal cores and peripheries;
- formal mechanisms like restructuring, (radical) truncation, and exfoliation.

While we particularly encourage submissions that touch on aspects of Hungarian
or other Uralic languages, work drawing on data from any and all languages is
definitely welcome.

Abstracts, set in a 12-point font with standard margins on all sides, must not
exceed two pages including data and references, and must not contain any
information identifying the author(s). Submissions to the workshop and the
preceding main session of the ICSH conference taken together are limited to
one individual and one joint abstract per author, or two joint abstracts per
author.

Abstracts are to be submitted in pdf via EasyChair at the following link:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=fctc1

Deadline for submission of abstracts to the workshop:
1 March 2023

Notification of acceptance:
by 31 March 2023

*The call for papers of ICSH16 is contained in an independent post.*
