Call for Papers:

Tourism imaginaries, identity and branding in the Mediterranean area:
Cross-disciplinary perspectives

Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Catania
27-28 November 2023

Emerging from cross-disciplinary work in the two-year research project
at Catania’s Department of Political and Social Sciences
“Mediterranean Tour: travel, politics, representation and tourism from
modernism to the present day” , this conference focuses on tourism in
the Mediterranean and the South in general. We welcome multi- or
cross- disciplinary contributions, from a range of research traditions
in the humanities, including but not limited to linguistics, history,
economics, literature, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, geography.
Numerous authors agree on the role of perceived concepts such as
‘identity’ and ‘authentic’ in branding the image of the destinations
and promoting sustainable tourism practices. Furthermore, the
heuristic notion of ‘imaginary’, current in social sciences, situates
findings within a broad picture of tourism and its associated
phenomena. Nowadays, these concepts are considered important
motivators of tourism, as well as representing a key element in the
development of the cultural aspects of many destinations.
The conference will focus on the social and cultural implications of
tourism imaginaries and identities for the Mediterranean area. We
suggest that these analytical tools may facilitate a
multi-disciplinary conversation about aspects of representation that,
in the current global socio-economic climate, has never been more
timely.

Proposals are invited for papers that address these and other related
issues, from a range of specific perspectives. Proposals should be no
more than 150 words and provide the title of the paper, the name,
email and eventual institutional affiliation of the proposer.

Abstracts should be submitted to: comunicazioni at med-tour.it.

Deadline for submission of abstract: 30th September 2023
Date for communicating acceptance of papers: 20th October 2023

Submissions for papers may include, but are not limited to, the
following topics:

- Ecolinguistics and ecosophy
- Tourism and Aesthetics
- History, Historiography

- Economic and social impacts of tourism

- Ecological literature
- Tourism and Social Media

- Legal and ethical aspects of Tourism
- Film and event tourism
- Tourism and Translation

methodological/ theoretical approaches. We encourage submission from
early career researchers. The official conference languages will be
English and Italian.

A selection of the presented papers will be considered for
publication. The publication decision will depend on the outcome of a
peer-review process. Acceptance of an abstract does not guarantee
publication of the entire paper. Papers not presented by their authors
will not be considered for publication.
