Linguistic Field(s): Ling & Literature

Call Deadline: 30-Sep-2023

Meeting Description:

The leitmotif of the conference is:
"Hidden" meanings across the fields of literature, linguistics and
culture

The reading of a text is often perceived as the uncovering of its
layers, its interpretation requiring going beyond the surface level to
more implicit, “hidden” meanings. Literature is indeed rife with
figured speech: symbols, similes or metaphors that require the reader
to establish connections between the literal and symbolic meanings of
the words, to decipher what lies “between the lines.” To analyse a
literary work, the close reading mode of analysis is frequently used
to extract meaning through a careful examination of the language in
relation to its context. It is through this process that the richness
and multiplicity of meanings within the text become apparent: how
should we engage with a text’s subtext? By peering beneath the
surface, what insights can be gained?
The problem of "hidden" meanings is also a matter of significant
importance and inquiry within the field of linguistics. Specifically,
this pertains to the exploration of diverse facets, such as the
presence of concealed cultural meanings deeply embedded within
language, the multiplicity of meanings and uses attributed to words,
phrases and sentences, the intricate layers of connotations that
contribute to their nuanced understanding, the complex challenges
encountered in translating and effectively conveying concealed
meanings across diverse languages and cultures, and the expansive
realm of figurative language encompassing metaphor, metonymy, and
other rhetorical devices. The realm of idioms seems to be particularly
captivating, with studies unraveling their origins, establishing their
cognitive and cultural motivation, and deciphering their unique
meanings deeply rooted in specific cultural contexts. Moreover,
research in “hidden” meanings may extend to the sphere of discourse
and pragmatic prosody, meticulously examining the pragmatic, cultural,
and discourse-functional aspects that exert influence on the usage of
language.
