Content
Working with a sign language is very different to working with spoken
languages, more so than just the medium. This workshop will go into
detail on the process followed by the National Institute for the Deaf
to create a bilingual South African Sign Language-English video
glossary.

• Vocabulary
o How to select appropriate elicitation materials?
• Data Collection and Participants
o How to elicit signs without influencing the participant?
o What should you look for in your participants?
• Data Analysis
o How to analyse signs in a sign language?
o What to do if there's no established list of phonemes?
• Studio Recordings
o How to position the model to get the best clarity.
• Practical experience
o How to prepare participants.
o Studio set-up to accurately reproduce signs.
