Subject: English, Norwegian Bokmål, Norwegian Nynorsk; Phonetics, Phonology, Psycholinguistics: Post-Doctoral Researcher, University of Agder

University or Organization: University of Agder
Department: Department of Foreign Languages and Translation
Job Location: Kristiansand, Norway
Job Title: Post-Doctoral Researcher
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonology; Psycholinguistics; Statistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)
                      Norwegian Bokmål (nob)
                      Norwegian Nynorsk (nno)

Description:

A fixed-term 100% position is available at the University of Agder,
Faculty of Humanities and Education, as a Post-Doctoral Research
Fellow affiliated to the Department of Foreign Languages and
Translation, for a period of three years. The position is located at
the UiA*s Kristiansand campus.

The starting date: Jan 8, 2024.

The person who is hired will contribute to a research project within
the Experimental Linguistics Research Group and its associated
laboratory run by Professors Linda Wheeldon and Allison Wetterlin.
(ELL https://ell.uia.no and https://www.uia.no/en/research/humaniora-o
g-pedagogikk/experimental-linguistics). The research project will be
run in collaboration with Dr. Katrien Segaert (School of Psychology,
University of Birmingham).

The research will employ speech analysis techniques to investigate
proficiency in spoken language production in terms of utterance
complexity and spoken fluency. The effects of ageing and bilingualism
will be addressed. The project will address these issues by exploiting
a large and rich speech-data set collected during the FAB project
(info). The data-set comprises speech from a picture description task
(see OSF project: https://osf.io/shwcn/). A large group of
participants (approximately 340) produced short descriptions these
pictures. They were diverse in terms of age (20-85), socio-economic
status, education level and ethnicity, and included both monolingual
English speakers, and Norwegian-English bilinguals who described
different scenes in each of their languages. For each speaker, there
are objective measures of language proficiency, non-linguistic
cognitive processes, and also detailed information about the
bilinguals’ language profile.

The successful candidate will be based at UiA in Kristiansand. The
postdoctoral researcher (PD) will work to prepare and analyse the data
set using speech analysis and statistical tools. They will be fully
involved in determining the detailed theoretical questions to be
addressed, and in the analysis and dissemination of the research.
There is broad scope for the PD to determine many aspects of the
project’s direction, any of which will have important theoretical
impacts. The PD will also create a publicly available
Speech-across-the-lifespan database. This database will contain speech
samples interlinked with information on relevant characteristics of
the speech, including a transcription of each speech sample, as well
as codes for relevant speech fluency and complexity measures (e.g.
disruptions and hesitations) and linguistic markers (e.g. word
frequency, length, syllables, morphemes). The project will support the
career development of the PD by enabling the development of their
research expertise in a theoretically and methodologically demanding
and work. The expectation is that the postdoctoral researcher will be
the first author on several publications.

Required qualifications:

 - PhD degree in a relevant subject, e.g. in English
linguistic/psycholinguistics (Candidates must have obtained their
doctorate or submitted their doctoral thesis before the appointment
decision is made and must have defended the thesis by the starting
date)
 - Interest in psycholinguistics with a focus on speech production,
bilingualism and/or healthy ageing
 - Excellent spoken and written English & Norwegian
 - Phonetics and speech analysis skills (Praat)
 - Strong data analysis skills, including mixed effects modelling
