Linguistic Field(s): Language Acquisition

Call Deadline: 31-Jul-2023

Meeting Description:

The colloquium provides a forum for recent research on language
acquisition and language learning. It is primarily intended as a venue
for researchers and doctoral students to present ongoing work on any
topic relevant to L1 and 2L1 acquisition, L2 and L3 learning, as well
to child heritage languages. The main goal is to bring forward recent
theoretical and experimental work on the acquisition of Romanian. Work
on the acquisition of other languages is also welcome.

2nd Call for Papers:

The Center for the Study of Language Development and Linguistic
Communication, University of Bucharest is pleased to announce its 8th
Bucharest Colloquium of Language Acquisition, which will be held on
November 16 - 18, 2023, in hybrid format (face-to-face and online).

Keynote Speaker
Petra Schultz – Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main

In addition to the main session, this year the colloquium will host
two workshops.

Logical Operators: Theory and Acquisition
organized by Adina Camelia Bleotu, University of Bucharest.

Keynote Speakers:
Anton Benz – ZAS, Berlin
Lyn Tieu – University of Toronto

The workshop is dedicated to logical operators in natural language,
both from a theoretical perspective, as well as with respect to
language acquisition. Typical examples of operators involve negation,
conjunction, disjunction, implication, quantification, modality. A
main interest of the workshop concerns theoretical accounts of
operators and scales such as <and, or>, <all, some>, <must, might>.
Another main interest is how these logical operators are acquired by
children. We welcome experimental papers employing various
methodologies (act-out tasks, truth value judgment tasks,
eye-tracking, story-telling, a.o.) to investigate logical operators in
natural language (first and second language acquisition, language
processing, online and offline methodological issues, a.o.). We also
welcome corpus and theoretical work which provides new insights into
the interpretation of logical operators.

Corpus-based and experimental research in SLA. The state-of-the-art
and future directions
organized by Carmen Mîrzea Vasile, University of Bucharest

Keynote Speaker:
Sylviane Granger – Université Catholique de Louvain
The workshop is aimed at fostering discussions on how learner corpus
research (LCR) does and can benefit the second language acquisition
(SLA) research paradigm, complementarily to experimental approaches.
We welcome papers exploiting any kind of learner corpus (raw or
bespoke, as well as electronic, annotated “natural” or “peripheral”,
etc.) presenting both corpus-based and corpus-driven research, as well
as reports of experiments, surveys, etc. We particularly encourage
proposals that investigate the learning of (relatively) understudied
second languages. For more details see LINGUIST List 34.1440.

Abstract Submission:
We invite one-page abstract submissions (TNR 12, single-spaced, 1-inch
margins), with an additional page for examples, figures and
references, for 30 minute oral presentations (20 minutes for the
presentation and 10 minutes for discussions). Abstracts must be in
English and they should be anonymous. Author’s name, affiliation and
e-mail for correspondence should be included in the accompanying
email. Please specify if your abstract is intended for the main
session or for one of the workshops and whether you are planning to
participate in person or online.
Abstracts should be sent to: bucla8 at lls.unibuc.ro. Authors may submit
up to two first-authored abstracts.
