Description:

The Department of Linguistics at Stony Brook University seeks to hire
a specialist in phonology for a one-year, full-time position as a
Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year of 2023/24. The
appointment will begin on September 1, 2023. The position has a
teaching load of two courses per semester, which includes introductory
phonology at the graduate and undergraduate level as well as seminars
in phonology or related areas. Duties include advising graduate
students with related interests and other phonology-related service
activities appropriate to academic rank. The department is committed
to diversity, equity, inclusion, and outreach, and we especially
welcome applications by scholars from under-represented populations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
 - A PhD in Linguistics or related field by the start date of the
appointment
 - An active research program in phonology or an adjacent field that
intersects with phonology
 - The ability to teach courses in phonology and related areas at the
graduate and undergraduate levels (BA, MA, PhD).

Preferred Qualifications:
 - Research focus that complements existing departmental strengths and
growth areas, including (in alphabetical order, and not limited to):
computational linguistics; historical linguistics; the interface of
phonology with morphology, syntax, and/or semantics; sign language;
speech and language pathology; statistical and quantitative methods.
 - Experience in teaching/TAing at the undergraduate and/or graduate
(MA, PhD) levels

The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in mentoring
students and a research focus that complements existing departmental
strengths and growth areas, including (in alphabetical order, and not
limited to): computational linguistics; historical linguistics; the
interface of phonology with morphology, syntax, and/or semantics;
second language acquisition; sign language; speech and language
pathology; statistical and quantitative methods.
