XIII International Conference of the Brazilian Linguistics Association
Short Title: XIII Abralin Int. Conference

Date: 30-Oct-2023 - 03-Nov-2023
Location: Curitiba, Brazil

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Meeting Description:

The 13th Abralin Conference will be held in person! It will be hosted
by the Federal University of Parana, in Curitiba, from October 30th
through November 3rd. In the previous week, from October 23rd through
27th, the 25th edition of the Abralin Institute will take place.

In this edition, the Abralin Conference will highlight the interfaces
of Linguistics and other areas of knowledge. The focus will be not
only on the interfaces already consolidated, such as that of
Linguistics and Speech Pathologies, but also the new ones, which
emerged from different but complementary perspectives, such as the
interface of linguistics and the teaching of Portuguese as an
additional language.

Focusing on the interface of linguistics and primary and secondary
education is a political decision by the Abralin's current board. We
are aware of the need for the Association to strengthen this dialogue
and contribute to improving the quality of primary and secondary
education in Brazil. Thus, the board deems this decision crucial,
especially at the present, when the lack of public policies for
Brazilian education over the years and during the pandemic has become
even more evident.

In order to effectively promote a dialogue with primary and secondary
educators, the XIII Abralin Conference will be opened, on October
30th, with a conference by Dr. Richard Larson (Stony Brook University)
and Dr. João Costa, a linguist from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa
and current Minister of Education of Portugal. In these talks, they
will discuss their efforts in their respective countries to integrate
linguistics and primary and secondary education. In the week before
the conference, during the 25th Abralin Institute, a 15-hour course
discussing this important integration will be taught by Dr. Richard
Larson. The course is open to everyone but it is especially meant for
primary and secondary educators.

It is noteworthy that the current Abralin board is concerned with
social inclusion. Therefore, we have decided not to raise the
membership fee, as well as to keep, for the 13th Abralin Conference,
the same registration fees charged in the 2019 conference. In
addition, to make our conference accessible to the Brazilian deaf
academic community, Libras interpreters will be provided for all
conferences and round tables.

Epistemological inclusion is also one of the goals in the 13th Abralin
Conference. As it can be seen in our programme, our conferences and
round tables comprise topics and researchers affiliated to different
theoretical approaches.

Additional information can be found in the Conference website.
