Description:
The CRC “Limits of Variability in Language” at the University of
Potsdam in Germany invites applications to this year’s linguistic
summer school:

Title: Understanding and Modelling Linguistic Variability (UMLV)

Website: https://www.sfb1287.uni-potsdam.de/summer-school-2023/

Date: August 21-25, 2023

Location: University of Potsdam, Campus Griebnitzsee; the venue can
easily be reached by public transport from both Potsdam and Berlin

Type of event: Linguistic summer school for students and early career
researchers

Format: in-person event, live stream of workshops via Zoom

Language of instruction: English

Description: Linguistic variability comes in different forms, ranging
from differences between individual speakers to linguistic diversity
in terms of phylogeny or structure. Examining linguistic variation
allows us to better understand what constitutes linguistic knowledge
and the phenomenon of language.

Linguistics exhibits a variety of subdisciplines that have developed
very different methodologies and theoretical models to capture,
measure, and classify linguistic variability. The summer school aims
to bring different strands of research together, including
psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic, computational, and various
theoretical perspectives (both formal and functional). It provides a
space for students and early career researchers from various fields of
linguistics to learn about different approaches to linguistic
variability and likewise provide a format to connect on a personal
level and exchange ideas.

Poster session: To make the summer school more interactive, the
participants can present some of their own research related to the
overall topic of the summer school and discuss this with the keynote
speakers, the instructors, the other participants, and researchers
from Potsdam. For this purpose, the participants have a chance to
participate in a separate poster session jointly organized by four
different CRCs (Berlin, Cologne, Potsdam, Saarbrücken).

Host Institution: Collaborative Research Centre 1287 “Limits of
Variability in Language: Cognitive, Computational, and Grammatical
Aspects” at the University of Potsdam, Germany

Organizers: Sina Bosch, Sabia Costantini, Andreas Hölzl, Timea Sarvas,
Kathleen Schneider
