Description:

PhD position in TESOL with emphasis on the perception/production of L2
English sounds

The Department of Languages and Literature of the University of
Nicosia offers one (1) position for a 3-year full-time PhD in TESOL
with particular emphasis on the perception/production of L2 English
sounds. The PhD will be supervised by Dr Georgios (George) Georgiou,
who has several publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals in
the areas of speech perception and production. For more information

What are the benefits:
 - PhD can be completed in 3 years
 - Students can be overseas and research their local context (it is
necessary, on occasion, to come to Cyprus e.g., for exams, the viva,
training, research, etc.)
 - There will be explicit guidance by the supervisor on the
preparation of the experiments, statistics, dissertation, etc.
 - Students will engage in high-quality research and publish their
findings in reputable journals under the guidance of their supervisor
 - Students will have the opportunity to present their work at
international conferences, seminars, and workshops
 - Students will strengthen their CV and expand their collaboration
bonds by participating in research groups such as the Cyprus
Linguistics and Humanities research group.

Admissions criteria:
In addition to the above, applicants must also satisfy the following
requirements:
 - Accredited Master’s degree in TESOL, or Applied Linguistics, or
English Language/ Linguistics
 - Teaching experience: at least one year
 - English language proficiency: Applicants should provide evidence of
English language proficiency equivalent to C1-C2.
 - Initial Research Proposal: An initial proposal (2,000-2,500 words,
excluding references) outlining the research topic, aim and
objectives, research questions and proposed research methodology.
 - Application form: Applicants must submit an application form for
admission and enrolment to the program. The application form requests
general information about the applicant, their qualifications,
relevant experience etc.
 - Statement of Purpose: Applicants are required to submit a
comprehensive outline highlighting their academic and individual
competencies and state why they believe they are suitable for
admission to the Program, as well as their reflections regarding the
expectations and value of the Program for their personal advancement
and career development.
 - Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must obtain two
recommendation letters from individuals who have known the applicant
in an educational and/or professional environment. At least one of the
recommendation letters must be from an academic institution where the
applicant has studied previously.
 - Previous theses/dissertations and any published work of academic
relevance (if any).
 - Individual Interviews. The interviews elicit motivation, potential
and personal mission.

 - a full CV,
 - a 1–2-page cover letter, and
 - a 2000–2500-word research proposal (excluding references) on a
dissertation topic related to the perception/production of English
sounds by L2 learners of English (including a short literature review
together with the originality and importance of the study, aim and
objectives, research questions, and methodology).

Please note that this does not comprise an official application to the
doctoral program. Potential applicants will be directed to the program
coordinator for guidance regarding their application. We usually
receive a large number of applications and therefore the selection
will be made on a competitive basis. The program starts in Fall
Semester 2023 (October 2023).
