Description:

Funded PhD on social meanings of language variation (variety of
English and some other details open)

The University of Derby is offering a studentship, covering (UK) home
fees and a stipend, available for a sociolinguistic project under the
supervision of Cara Penry Williams. The working project title is
"Social meanings of language variation: Culture and creativity in
everyday and high performances". It focusses on evaluations of
language in social media and film, song and/or plays. The project is
pre-defined but multiple elements can be tailored to your interests,
including the focus identities and variety of English.

The successful applicant will receive a maintenance stipend (based on
the minimum stipend defined by UKRI, currently £17,668 for the
academic year 2022/23) and home MPhil/PhD tuition fees (£4,596 -
subject to amendment) only up to the target submission date. Please
note, if your application is successful and you are assessed as
Overseas for fees purposes, you will need to pay the difference
between the Home fees and the EU/Overseas fees. The intended intake
period is September 2023.
