Hello Linguists!

This is Percival the Mammoth, writing to you from the shoulder of
Daniel, the system administrator for LINGUIST List. We've had great
fun this first year at LL. There is, after all, nothing quite like the
satisfaction of taking a misbehaving piece of code and getting it
working right, apart from the even more excellent feeling of doing
that and knowing that having that code work correctly will actually
benefit somebody else.

We've just Daniel's second year in the Computational Linguistics PhD
program here at Indiana University. It's been a year with plenty of
fun classes and way to many projects, because it's really hard to stop
Daniel from immediately agreeing to every single project idea
involving either Biblical Hebrew or morphological analysis using
finite-state transducers (even when these have very little to do his
supposed research project of further enabling machine translation of
minority languages).

If we're not working, it can be a little difficult to tell, since our
main hobbies are the same as our research, just with constructed
languages instead of natural ones (though, to be fair, phonemic hats
do make some things a bit more complicated). For very slightly more
variety, we've decided to read more over the summer and have so far
reread the Hobbit and are considering trying to make it through some
of the volumes of the History of Middle-Earth that we've collected
over the years but haven't read yet (we have about 25 books by Tolkien
and have only like about 7 of them). Daniel says rock climbing is also
fun, but not many people make harnesses in my size, so I've never
tried it.

Thank you, dear readers, for reading this brief snippet of our lives,
and thank you even more for your donations
(https://funddrive.linguistlist.org/donate) that fund our continued
academic existence.

Percival (but actually Daniel because it's hard to type with tusks)
