Subject: Current Approaches to Language Ideology and Metalinguistic Discourse

Despite growing interest in language ideology and metalinguistic
discourse (e.g., Mar-Molinero & Stevenson, 2006; Duchêne & Heller,
2007; Johnson & Tommaso, 2010; Hollington & Storch, 2016; Lane, Costa
& De Korne, 2017; Gal & Irvine, 2019; Costa & Connor, 2019), most
dedicated, wide-ranging volumes and journal special issues are from
the turn of the century, some twenty years ago (Schieffelin, Woolard &
Kroskrity, 1998; Blommaert, 1999; Kroskrity, 2000; Dirven, Hawkins &
Sandikcioglu, 2001; Gal & Woolard, 2001; Blackledge & Pavlenko, 2002).
Similarly, despite methodological advances, empirical research in this
area tends to rely either on qualitative methods such as ethnography
and content and thematic analyses or what can be termed “classic”
corpus linguistic techniques (concordance, collocation, and keyword
analyses). In addition, as in applied linguistics research more
broadly, there is a tendency for different methodological approaches
to be associated with different “camps” (e.g., qualitative versus
quantitative), resulting in a limited overlap between them (see Walsh,
2021 for an exception to this trend). This has led to a gap in
research that integrates diverse methods and approaches, impeding a
comprehensive understanding of the complex nature of language ideology
and metalinguistic discourse. This book aims to bridge the divide by
bringing together a wide range of current methodological approaches in
one volume, providing readers with a comparative insight and
facilitating a more holistic understanding of the research in this
area, as well as a more nuanced understanding of language ideology and
metalinguistic discourse across a variety of sociolinguistic contexts.

We are pleased to announce a call for contributions to an edited
volume titled “Current Approaches to Language Ideology and
Metalinguistic Discourse”, which aims to showcase the full range of
methodological approaches currently in use in the study of language
ideology and metalinguistic discourse.

We welcome proposals for chapters reporting on empirical studies of
language ideology and/or metalinguistic discourse with (but not
limited to) the following foci:

- Innovation in relevant existing qualitative and/or quantitative
methods
- Integration of qualitative and quantitative methods into
mixed-methods designs
- Multivariate modeling (e.g., exploratory factor analysis, cluster
analysis, topic modeling)
- Comparative analysis of different methods for triangulation purposes
- Challenges and opportunities associated with different methods or
theoretical models
- New and emerging discursive sites and multimodal discourse (e.g.,
video games, social media)
- Understudied languages and sociolinguistic situations (any approach)
- Novel theoretical insights issuing from empirical findings (any
approach)

Interested authors are invited to submit an abstract of no more than
350 words (excluding references), outlining the topic, research
question(s), methodology, and relevance to the volume of their
proposed chapter. Abstracts should be submitted via email as a single
Word document by August 31, 2023. The proposed contributions should
be original and not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
All submissions will undergo a double-blind peer-review process.

- Expected publication in late 2024 by a leading international
academic publisher
- Funding for open source publication of the entire volume may become
available

- Abstract submission deadline: August 31, 2023
- Notification of abstract acceptance: September 15, 2023
- Volume proposal submission: October 15, 2023
- Draft chapters due: January 15, 2024
- Chapter reviews due: March 15, 2024
- Final draft deadline: April 15, 2024
- Volume submission: May 15, 2024
- Volume publication: November 15, 2024
