Annual Conference of the Australian Linguistic Society

The University of Sydney 29 November – 1 December 2023

Call for workshops and themed sessions

We invite proposals for workshops and themed sessions at the Annual
Conference of the Australian Linguistic Society to be held at The
University of Sydney from 29 November to 1 December 2023.

Workshops

Workshops are topic-focused sessions aimed at professional
development. Examples are workshops on statistics or phonetic
analysis. They are typically facilitated by an expert in the relevant
field. Workshops may have a specific audience, e.g. students, or be
open to anyone. Proposals are welcome on any area that is relevant to
linguistics.

Please submit proposals for workshops, maximum one A4 page, with the
name of the facilitator(s) and a short statement on their relevant
expertise, as well as a brief statement on the rationale for proposing
the workshop, and the intended audience.

Themed sessions

Themed sessions are regular conference sessions centred around a
special topic, such as Australian Indigenous languages or Laboratory
Phonology. We invite proposals for sessions on any aspect of
linguistics. Themed sessions should contain 3-8 talks on a coherent
theme to be described in a paragraph of ca. 300 words plus references.
Themed sessions can replace talk slots with a discussion slot as the
organisers see fit. The organisers may choose to go in-person, hybrid
or fully online for their session, and should indicate this in the
proposal. Organisers of themed sessions are in charge of quality
assurance guaranteeing the general standard of the conference. They
will review abstracts submitted to their sessions using the same
criteria as the main program. Accepted abstracts that are not deemed
suitable by session organisers will be included in the general
program.

Please submit proposals for themed sessions, maximum one A4 page, with
the name(s) of the organiser(s), and a short statement on the topic
and some contextualisation of how it fits in within the relevant field
and the discipline. Please also supply a list of tentative
participants and any designated keynote speakers. Address for
submissions: conf at als.asn.au

Deadline for proposals: 19 June 2023 Announcements of accepted
workshops/themed sessions: 30 June 2023

All abstracts will be reviewed by the ALS Program Committee. For
further information and updates please see the ALS website or send an
email to the ALS2023 Conference team: conf at als.asn.au
